I reported it. You should too, if you haven't; the Knot/Nest gods do read reports and email complaints, especially if they gets a lot of them about a particular post.

I did report it. I'm not sure what bothers me more.  The fact that the comment was actually made; the fact that NOBODY bothered to point it out as a racist comment; or the fact that the offending poster is so unrepetant about her racist attitudes.
  • edited December 2011
Actually, the fact that nobody (w/the exception of ringpop) on this board has any reaction is making me even more ticked off.  Maybe I am overreacting about the original post - who knows...
  • edited December 2011
I don't think you're overreacting. I was on my way out the door when I read the thread yesterday, and just now had time to come back and reread the replies to it. I guess I can understand not wanting to stir trouble as far as the other posters not calling it out, but I think what bugs me the most is the fact that the OP doesn't seem to feel the least bit sorry that she's obviously offended someone. ::sigh::

I can't believe her attitude.  I reported the post.  Hopefully the mods will do something about it.

don't be too ticked off... if everyone's like me, I read this board like twice a week =PI agree the post is kind of ridiculous, and instead of facing the issue, sounds like everyone is dancing around it and trying to find humor in it.
  • edited December 2011
it's not about being ticked off. there's really no room for those comments anywhere on these boards. people dancing around it and making humor out of it are the very reasons why those comments still exist.  if that woman finds out that her post was reported and deleted, she'll think about it the next time she wants to put a comment like that up on these boards. hopefully, she realizes that because it was reported that it offended people and won't do it again. of course this is the ideal situation.

I think it's just another unfortunate condition of the internet.  Idiots like that feel the protection a computer screen and keyboard.  That person is a professional, so I doubt she has the audacity to spew racist comments like that in real life, outside of her home.  BTW, it's always known that I'm the sole Asian on the board.  The comment was intended to antagonize - it wasn't just a slip of the tongue, so to speak.     And I know it may not be news to you guys, but the Philly public school system is in the midst of a violent crime spree directed against Asian immigrant students.  I can't help but feel that comments like "Asians can't drive...haha" form the basis of physical antagonism.http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/news-and-opinion/Asian-Students-Under-Assault.html?page=1

With all due respect foolforfood, turning against us here isn't the best course of action against this type of thing. I saw your comment in that thread too, and instead of addressing the poster or the specific comment, you accused everyone else on the board of apathy, just as you have accused us here. That might be part of the reason you didn't get a whole lot of sympathy from them. It seems that you're dealing with this in a roundabout way.I'm not saying that you didn't deserve sympathy, and I completely agree that the comment was inappropriate and am just as bothered as you are. I want to do everything I can to stop prejudice. One step at a time. We could have a b!tchfest here about how horrible that comment was, I'd rather do something than just whine and build up resentment. In any case, since I am a mod on other boards, I've also emailed this directly to Knot Annie.

Ring pop - I've been on that nest board for the last few months.  The person in question has been the source of a lot of tension on that board.  I was not shocked that she made those comments.  I was however shocked that other ppl kept posting to that thread, as if no racist comment had been made.  Then I got angry b/c I was accused of being too sensitive and overzealous. Ppl were pretty much saying, "Oh FFF, everyone's a racist, haha..get over it". I was completely dumbfounded as to why nobody else made an issue over the racist comment, so I came to this board.  Now, I know this board is typically on life support, but I figured others would share in my anger/disappointment.  When I didn't hear anything from the peanut gallery, I started to honestly think that maybe I was overreacting (I've been known to do this!).  I don't think I pit any blame on you guys - I'm not sure why you think that. And finally, I didn't engage the racist commentor in a b!tchfest b/c nothing good would come of it.  She was completely unrepetent about her attitudes and other regulars seemed either too busy or apathetic to care.  I don't believe ppl like that ever change - especially when they have a loyal standing audience out in nestie land.  If you think my approach is wrong, then that's your opinion.  I also find it disheartening that after 2 days or so after the first report was made, TK and TN has done nothing about it.

It takes several reports before a thread gets flagged and the moderators take a serious look at it. But I've emailed it to Annie so she will look at it soon, I'm sure. The "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" song is from Avenue Q. Have you seen it?

I am not familiar with that forum and I don't think I want to be. I am surprised the mods haven't done anything about their behavior - do they check the alerted posts based on the number of reports or the content? I thought with if even just a few reports complaining of such serious offense as racism, it'd get enough attention for them to check it out?

Ah sorry.  I should clarify my comment.  I meant, don't get ticked off by the lack of response from the Asian board, because I don't read it that frequently.  You have every right to be ticked off and point out the racist comment that was posted, as I would have if I had read it.  Hope this helps :(  I do understand where you're coming from and hope this is taken care of quickly!

FWIW, I'm only here once a day, maybe.I didn't engage the racist commentor in a b!tchfest b/c nothing good would come of it. Maybe that's why no one else said much? It's unfortunate, but bigots are bigots. It's 100% unacceptable, but their minds won't change, especially if someone else comes at them in anger too. You have every right to be mad. In fact, that bothered me too to read it. I reported it too.

Well, we can't really expect other people to stand up for us... gotta look out for ourselves, ya know? Anyway foolforfood, I'm sorry if I misunderstood your post. It's just that "I'm ticked off that no one here is as outraged as I am" seems to be implying an accusation that we're also letting it slide, but perhaps I read it wrong. For the record, I do find that attitude disgusting and I hope she gets at least a temporary ban for that.Regarding the reports, it takes a specific number of reports (10 or so) before the Knot/Nest Gods get a notification to review something, I think. Unless they happened to be looking for something, I don't think that one or two reports, even with a complaint as severe as racism, would be reviewed. But as I said, I've emailed this directly to Knot Annie, plus enough of us have reported it that I'm sure it will get looked at soon. (I haven't heard back yet, but maybe she needs to forward it to the appropriate Nest God.) I don't see any nestie moderator for that board though.

I just read the post and I'm reporting it as well. D: And I seldom go on this board. Sorry! And I read the article regarding S. Philly High students... and I find that absolutely disgusting. How can the faculty do so little regarding the HATE CRIME that persists in their school? ... But I suppose that's another topic for a better time in the day.

Let's be clear, FFF, nobody jumped to help you because you have done absolutely.nothing.at.all to endear yourself to that board. There are posts bashing Catholics all the time -- I don't see you defending me and my religion.  There are posts bashing liberals -- again, I don't see you jumping in and defending them. You yourself have bashed numerous posters for their politics.  Furthermore, you yourself have made a number of glaring generalizations -- typical stuck up Ivy Leaguer or whatever it was comes to mind. And finally, it's laughable you think you are the boards lone Asian, and this is some sort of vendetta against you.

Let's be clear, FFF, nobody jumped to help you because you have done absolutely.nothing.at.all to endear yourself to that board. You're right, I'm not one of the popular girls on your board.  But that doesn't mean that you deserve a prize for letting a racist retort go unchecked. There are posts bashing Catholics all the time -- I don't see you defending me and my religion. There are posts bashing liberals -- again, I don't see you jumping in and defending them.I've been on your board for about 3 months now.  I have never seen a blatant anti-Catholic comment.  If I did, I would definitely mark a remark against it.  I certinaly would not add to the convo as if the anti-Catholic comment hadn't been made. You yourself have bashed numerous posters for their politics. Furthermore, you yourself have made a number of glaring generalizations -- typical stuck up Ivy Leaguer or whatever it was comes to mind.Politics are meant to be spoken with passion. I DON'T BASH PPL, I BASH IDEAS.  Also, I apologized for the ivy league comment, and I never intended to offend anyone with that comment.  And I find it really remarkable that you're analogizing a comment about ivy leaguers and a racist comment. And finally, it's laughable you think you are the boards lone Asian, and this is some sort of vendetta against you.I don't think of it as a vendetta.  I think it's trifling that you had to follow me to this board and make yourself look like an a$$.  Who has the vendetta here?

Amy, you can hate me all you want, but you'll never be able to paint me as something worse than a racist.  I didn't comment on TK post re: catholicism b/c to be honest, that blog entry made absolutely no sense to me.  The small font to her blog didn't help matters.  And at that very moment, I was faced with a couple racist comments on TN.  Do I think you're a racist? No.  Do I think a majority of the regulars are racists? No.  Do I think more than 1 racist comment from more than 1 regular has been made? Absolutely.  Hence the pluralization of RACISTS in this thread title. At the end of the day, racist comments were made.  The game you're playing with me right now is all smoke and mirrors.  There is absolutely no justification for what the two posters said.
