Kiddush Cup

My FI and I are looking into getting 2 Kiddish cups (is that customary to get two and not one?) I think the Rabbi had wanted us to get two.  I am looking online for them, but they are just so expensive.  Can I just possibly use nice glasses I already have, or is the Kiddush Cup like blessed or something and it has to be a true "Kiddush" cup?  I read that families pass them down, but my parents don't have any and his parents are Catholic, so I am SOL with that. Thanks for your help!

I used two that were important to my family, but, no, you absolutely don't have to do that!  You can use any two glasses.  Many people just use glasses that are provided by their caterer.

But, you do have an opportunity to buy two glasses that can, ultimately, be special to you and used to celebrate holidays.  Or, what about purchasing two pretty wine glasses, which could be less than kiddush cups (which, by the way, you can find at all price points, if you want to keep looking) and, after the ceremony, using them as your toasting glasses at your reception?  That would make them special!

You can use any glasses.  We had been planning to use the kiddush cup that each of us got for a gift on our bar and bat mitzvahs, but my mom surprised us with these handblown glass goblets that we ended up using instead.  

But ditto LBRM that you can find kiddush cups at all price points.  Have you looked on amazon?  (clicky for example, although they have cheaper, I thought this was kind of a cool look)

We just borrowed one from the synagogue.

Both we and my son used the kiddush cups as our "something borrowed," which may be another alternative.

We're using one that has been in FI's family for a few generations and one that I bought for my dad a few years ago in Israel.  We also were considering purchasing a new one instead for us to then have in our home, but we decided it'll mean more to use ones from our family.
