Local Foods You Wish the Whole World Knew About

This is a spin off from the QOTD since it turns out that was a local/cultural thing.

What food(s) do you know of locally or culturally do you wish the whole world knew about? Anything you're not sure if it's local or not? Ask us!

I'm bored, okay? Entertain me! :)

For me, it's goetta. It's huge up here with all the German people. We have a festival every year to celebrate it's awesomeness where it can be found on just about every kind of food imaginable.

Fun fact: The spell check doesn't even regonize goetta as a word.

    Two words. Cheese. Curds.
ETA The kind that are so fresh that they squeak when you eat them.
  • Chelsea, I have heard great things about cheese curds...

  • Food that squeeks? That's scary.
  • Here in Rochester we have garbage plates. They're an awful-for-you monstrosity that is popular with drunk college students. I've never had one because they're gross haha. Back in Buffalo we have Ted's Hot Dogs. They are an amazing little local chain and I have yet to find better hot dogs.

So good. So unbelievably good.  I wish there was a way to safely send fresh cheese curds to other states. But there's not. You have to eat them within like a half of a day for it to work.

  • OH MY GOSH I LOVE CHEESE CURDS!!!

My grandparents have a house in Cooperstown, NY and they sell them at this place called Fly Creek (clicky). OMG they are so good.

I know everyone's heard of a BLT, but a lot of places in Raleigh (and probably NC in general) have friend green tomato BLT's with pimento cheese. So yummy, but so unhealthy. I always just take a bite of FI's.

    I adore poutine.
  • Sorry Chelsea, I wasn't a bug fan of cheese curds when I stayed in WI :( Unfortunately the food in PA that is local is kinda terrible. Shoo Fly pie is just a sticky sweet mess, we have our own version of "pot pie" which has no crust and instead is this sludge of slimy noodles and chicken. And then there's pigs stomach which I will spare you the details.

  • I'm from the Caribbean, so I grew up eating saltfish!  It's so good, and it's normally eaten for breakfast.  It's salted cod that has been boiled with peppers and onions.  Usually accompanied with boiled green bananas and a mixture of oakra/kale.

My other favorite is red peas soup, which you actually add sugar in your bowl when you eat it.

My grandmother makes the best drink called mauby.  It's a fermented drink mixture of a certain tree bark, orange peel, sugar, ginger and spices.  You boil it all together and let it sit for about a week before you drink it.  Kinda tastes like ginger beer soda.

We just had a family recently move into our town from New Orleans and they opened a po-boy restaurant. I don't know how authentic their shrimp po-boys are to what you get in New Orleans, but they are so delicious.

  • Hickory park is an awesome restaurant here. I actually had someone on the military brides board ask me about it because they tried it haha Sweet corn is big here but I'm not a fan. So ready to move back to Texas

Think like deep fried pizza, but way better.

"a pocket of secret-recipe dough stuffed with generous portions of mozzarella cheese and homemade sauce. The pocket is then deep-fried to a crisp, golden brown, making a goodness all its own."

This isn't a food, but we have Cheerwine (clicky).
    and

And you can't come to North Carolina without eating some barbecue:
(or mac and cheese or biscuits or collards)
North Carolina has Eastern and Western barbecue - Western has a ketchup based sauce and Easter has a Vinegar base.

We've also given the world Pepsi, Hardee's, Texas Pete, and Mount Olive Pickles.

Midge, I had to try to make people understand the awesomeness, haha!

ETA: Another reason New Orleans is awesome: I can post during the day this week because I have the whole week off of work for Mardi Gras break! Woo!

  • I was going to say fried green tomatoes. I had never even heard of them until I moved to Alabama. They are soo good! I've never had them in a BLT though.
