Marriage License

Has any one started researching the requirments to obtain a marriage license yet? I wanted to know is the Maryland the only state that has State and Local (county laws).
The funniest requirement on the Maryland State Law, is the bride has to know the grooms last name before applying. They actually quiz you on it when you get there.

Re: Marriage License

  • That's hilarious. I looked our information up months ago so all I remember for sure is that it's $30 and the earliest you can get it is a month ahead of time. I think there's also a question on there making sure you're not first cousins.

Ours is the same but I have no idea about what, if any, questions there are.
  • Ours is pretty simple as well..... its $150 unless you have 12 or more hours of pre-marriage counseling and then its $60 I believe. Other than that I just think you fill out the paperwork and bring your birth certificate in. I cant wait to get ours!!

  • Ours is $28 and you can apply 6 months in advance but you can't pick it up until less than a month out. And I know you need a birth certificate to get your parents names spelled right. There is a witness who says you're not first cousins =)

FI and I were actually discussing this last night!!

I think you just have to get it no more than 60 days before your actual marriage ceremony takes place. There are also different requirements for different ages. 21+ you have to show your social security card (or W-2) and another valid form of identification, and both bride and groom must be present at the time.

    Ours is $60.

It is MUCH easier to get married than it is to change your name!

Geez... why is MN so expensive??

ETA: I just looked it up and its $115 with no counseling, and $40 with counseling.... love the savings!!!

  • We just have to have a valid ID & know our SS # (don't even need to show the card). Our license costs $30 and is valid for 60 days.

I remember for my first marriage (10+ yrs ago), we had to have blood tests to be sure we weren't related. They got rid of that, however, on the website, it does state that you can't marry certain relatives. LOL.

  • Ours is $30 I believe. Our church told us where to go and everything. We don't need blood drawn or anything thank god And agreed Kelsey. It's easier to get married than changing your name! Lol
  • My parents got blood tests to check for relation and STDs! My mom was very offended since she was a virgin.

  • KY used to do blood tests too. I'm SO thankful they don't anymore because a fun day would turn into a horrible one (deathly afraid of needles...).

Where do you go to get your marriage license? Town Hall?  I live in MA but am getting married in NH....
  • Same here Midge! Someone on the MB board who got married Saturday started changing her name. She said they had to go get their marriage license certified. I thought it was all done after the priest and us signed it and the wedding took place. But I'm clueless lol

PA is really easy, we just have to present a photo ID and I think it's $65. You can go to any county up to 60 days ahead of time, and there is a three day waiting period to use it. The only thing that is a PITA is since we live out of state, figuring out when we can be in PA Monday-Friday to get the license.

Now we just have to decide if we are "self uniting" or having an officiant because they have two different types of licenses.

<div>You go to the Register of Deeds office in the state that your getting married in. They have an office for every county and it should be valid for the entire state, even if you get a licence in a different county than the one you're getting married in.</div>
  • I just looked up Indiana's laws.  Here's a good one to know:

Marriage between first cousins is permitted if both individuals are at least sixty-five (65) years of age.

    Interesting!
  • We are from Texas but getting married in California. We will be getting it the Monday before the 30th. We need to pay $60. I need to know if I am changing my name or not. Plus we need to know the names and city/state born in of our parents. No birth certificates just valid ID. I actually emailed the county clerks' office and she sent me a nice list of what we need to do and know.

Nope they dont keep them, you can actually mail them in with your application and they make a copy of it and send everything back to you (for SS, not sure on DMV).

    Funny Story:<div>
</div><div>When my dad and mom got married they had to have a blood test done.  My dad is DEATHLY afraid of needles and passed out in the Dr's office and hit his head on the table.  He busted it open and had to get stitches and also had a pretty decent concussion.  He still gives my mom a hard time about "he should have known then how big of a pain that marriage would be" haha</div>

</div><div>It means you can only get married and be married in Missouri with that license. You can't get it in Missouri, travel to Alabama, get married there, and then try to file it with Missouri. Your marriage license must be obtained from the state you're getting married in.

    </div>
  • In CT you have to apply in the town you live in or town you're getting married in if you're out of state. I think the fee is by town but it's about $35 You need birth ID and SS cards. There is no waiting period and it's valid for 65 days. Oh and you both have to appear in person but not necessarily at the same time.
