I was really super excited to be Mrs. L...we received our marriage license exactly 3 weeks For me there was never any question that I would take his last name...after our wedding..we recieved our marriage license in the mail exactly 3 weeks.. I went to the Social Security office..I was suprised that I had no problem and was literally in there 10 minutes (I brought all neccessary documents and brought any that I even THOUGHT they would ask for)..lol..just in case..I didnt want to wait in line and waste my time...my next stop will be DPS to change my drivers license..I was going to do it the same day..but had to be jazzy for my new pic..as far as bills..i will change them as they come in the mail

People at work are slowly adjusting to my new last name..since last names is how we refer to each other..if they call me my maiden name I dont answer until they figure out..oh..new last name...and Im grateful that my initals didnt change..now Im trying to get my signature pretty..Ive spent 30 years..prefecting writing my maiden name..

my only hiccup is changing all accounts and important paperwork...I was okay with my SS and DL, but everything else feels a little daunting..

  • I have officially changed it!

Technically we got married in December and had a Vow renewal on the date that we had originally planned for (April 14, 2012)

I used my maiden name (as my supervisor only knew about the vow date) up until we got back from our honeymoon.. and then started the process. After I got my new SS card, I got my name changed on most of my credit/bank cards, everything connected with my job (insurance, emails, voicemails, hr files, etc).. and will work on the passport as soon as I have some money to take care of that!..lol

I don't have my license (I know.. I'm slackin on that).. so I had to get my ID changed as well.. but that's going to be a hassle, because it's orginally a MA ID, and changing it to a MD ID is a serious process, that I'm in no hurry to go through!

  • I'm so glad you brought this up. I remember when I got married the first time, people just started referring to me with the new name and I never felt good about it. I ended up hyphenating and using all kinds of names and it just became super confusing. I'll call the doctor's office and say, "look under James; no, Williams, no James-Williams" then they'll think I'm talking about some man named James Williams... then I am just spent...

Well, when we went to do the marriage license, they said that you have to pick and I was so not ready for it and I wanted to cry right at the window, but I agreed to change to my FIs name -- at least on the license.

His only desire was that I drop wasband's name which I don't have much of a problem with, but I did not want my son to be the odd man out in the house, and now he will be.

I still may go to Social Security and just keep my maiden name and consider it done... I think ultimately this would be best for me... It feels like giving up my identity... but having said that, I worked for 8 years at my last job where even six years after my divorce they were still calling me by my former married name...

Can't wait to change my name. I love my last name its short and common and I've gotten used to it, however my dad sucks so I can't wait to drop it. I also hate signing papers for my son and my name is different while he and daddy's is the same. I used to want to hyphenate but FI was like NO!!!!

[QUOTE]I am definitely changing mine. I changed mine the first time I was married and I still have it. My FMIL asked me this weekend was I going to hyphenate my name. I told her no; what would I look loike hypenating two married names. I'd be on Maury. LOL I did have a hard time thinking about changing my name since my children have the wasband's last name and my degrees and carrer has been built with the wasband's last name. I talked to the kids about me having a different last name than them. The girls said their names would change when they got married anyway. I was just going to use it for work purposes, but I feel that would be disrespectful to my new husband so I am dropping it altogether. I am looking forward to changing my name. I've printed out all the docs to do so.
