re: marking
Phil had been in a home with 8 other dogs before he came to us. I figure 1) his previous foster mom couldn't watch him like a hawk, like H and I were and 2) because of the other dogs, there were probably more smells to mark over (Jake doesn't go in the house, and we use the wet vac after every foster leaves).
So, we were on Phil like white on rice and any time he started to lift his leg, we both would scream NO! and/or make the Cesar Milan - "EH!" noise. Also, we let him out several times a day (didn't rely on him using a doggie door) and allowed him to mark up the yard to his heart's content.
He tried to mark a few times the first day he arrived, he tried to mark once the next day, and then no more after that.
