Older Movie Review -- Dredd

This is not a remake of the old Judge Dredd movie..  I had thought it was a remake, so went in with totally wrong expectations.  It's just another chapter of the comic.  Major complaint: Karl Urban never takes off his helmet or uniform. I found this disappointing, since he's one of my Hollywood boyfriends.

The story itself is decent.  It's not very complicated or convoluted and I appreciate that the director didn't try to take this movie into the 2 1/2 hour range.  It was 1 1/2 hours and that was probably just a bit too long.  Basically Judge Dredd responds to a call with a psychic rookie at his side, that gets them locked into a 200 story apartment building full of residents/gang members looking to kill them.

Lena Headley is the main villain and oh did they make her scary ugly.  I've always thought she was a fascinating woman to look at, b/c she's not stereotypically pretty and has very strong features.  But they made her straight up scary ugly.  I would cross the street to avoid this woman IRL.

The movie is seriously bloody. I was actually just a bit nauseous.  Even DH turned away at some points.  I have to give props to the special effects director and artists, b/c it was highly realistic violence for a sci-fi and stomach turning.  Also, the sets and other designs are fantastic.  Even DH commented on the world that was created and how awesome it looked as part of the story and he's not really one to notice that.

Oh and his gun is even more cool than it was in the last movie.  Someone involved in the designs of this movie was a comic book fan or really did their research.

Thanks for the gore warning. H can usually handle comic-book/fantasy violence, but if it's bloody, this is off our list.

It's rough.  Part of it is a plot point (there's a drug called slomo for slow motion that basically shows you frame-by-frame someone getting shot) and the rest was just gratuitous.
