Wedding Woes

FMB

That's my hair. To style, I use Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel (yes, the stuff for burns/sunburns) and TRESemme Flawless Curls Curl Definition Jelly for styling. I don't dry my hair with a towel. I squeeze out the water and wrap it in the towel to soak up the excess.  And above all, I don't do anything to my hair while it's dry. NOTHING. I do own/use a brush, but it's rare for me to use it. Aussie Moist is a good shampoo/conditioner for my weekly washings. I've used them about 10 years now and they come in 33 oz bottles with a pump. ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner is a good deep conditioner (it's in the black people aisle in a bottle or a packet) and their aloe shampoo is really good as well.  She may need a good moisturizer (cream) and to seal the moisture in with a light oil (grapeseed or jojoba). I can't help her with that part because I don't know how much moisture she needs, but I use Cantu (again, in the black people aisle) Shea butter Oil Moisturizer (it's a cream). Does she do hot oil treatments? Warmed EVOO on dry hair with a cap over it, wrapped in a hot towel. Seriously, it's a miracle. Every single night I mist with a bit of aloe vera juice, water and glyecerin, put on the Cantu, and seal. Conair makes a shower comb that I swear by. I only comb/detangle 2-3 times a week and this is what I use. http://mp.hairboutique.com/Conair-Accessories-Shower-Comb-Pink/P/111834I rinse my hair every few days and put a bit of Leave-In on before I style with the gel and jelly from above. It's Fructis Leave in Conditioning cream, nothing fancy. Everything can be found at WalMart/CVS. Seriously.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! Also - I did not know you could use aloe vera gel for your hair. I have learned something new today! I keep jojoba oil and avocado oil around the house, maybe I'll send her a bottle of jojoba. I don't think she's ever used a hot oil treatment, but she might be up for it. I'm slowly getting her to like her hair, but it should be healthy, and forcing a brush that doesn't want to go and trying to flat iron it (with NO conditioning or oiling!) are not conducive to a healthy head of hair.

FMB, my hair just curled up and died at that.I don't flat iron anymore. I've found that my hair behaves best when I leave it alone and let it do what it wants to do. I have flat ironed since April/May when I got my color done and a trim. If she wants to flat iron she should put on a bit of Neutrogena Triple Moisture leave-in and let her hair completely air dry. It provides coverage before heat styling and isn't too heavy/gunky. A good flat iron is her friend. She'll go over her hair fewer times and a temperature dial will save her hair.

You can also use KY jelly, but I've never tried that. I can do my hair from my kitchen. My sex drawer is another story.

She's only 13? Bah, I thought she was older than that. I hated my hair when I was 13, too!

I'm trying to teach her things young :-)I loved my hair when I was 13. Mainly because it went curly when I was 13 and I ALWAYS wanted curly hair. I still <3 it. Unfortunately her hair isn't like anybody else's in her family. They all have brown wavy hair. She's the only redhead, the only one with freckles. Basically? She's the milk man's baby.

I was switched at birth. Everyone in my family is pale with straight hair. In I come with thick, dark, curly hair.

Your real family is out there, waiting for you Hooka!Yea, her mom tells her to brush her hair, like that's going to help. I barely have the same curl and I don't brush my hair (I use a wide toothed comb, like yours) and it's WAY healthier since I started doing so. She needs something stronger than what I use to control frizz, and she needs to stop with the flatiron.
