Wedding Woes

Penn State sanctions were announced.

"The NCAA imposed a $60 million sanction on the university, which is equivalent to the average gross annual revenue of the football program. These funds must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university. The sanctions also include a four-year football postseason ban and a vacation of all wins from 1998 through 2011. The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records. Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. In addition, the NCAA reserves the right to impose additional sanctions on involved individuals at the conclusion of any criminal proceedings."

  • Wow...harsh.

I just can't level the fact that they're punishing CURRENT for past transgressions.  But hey...I'm not the NCAA...

Harsh!!! They got off light you moron!
I bet you wouldn't feel this way if your child or a child you knew was raped.

The whole entire football program and the schools BOD's knew and covered it up. You should shut your mouth, unless it has to do with make up, because you are a moron!
  • *eyeroll*

I also wouldn't want to punish children for their parents' transgressions, but anyone who isn't "man/woman" enough to post under something that isn't an AE probably can't stand to hear reasonable argument.

  • vacation of all wins from 1998 through 2011. <- I don't know squat about sports....and am curious how this in operationalized. Like, who gets those wins now? Can the players still say they won so and so game? I'm for once curious about something sports-related (other than atheletes).
    image
  • Apparently even sportswriters don't understand the vacating of wins either.  It's as if the game never really happened, because no one won the game...limbo.
    image
  • It's such a losing situation for so many people.   This is going to have a lasting impact on all sports that relied on the football income to support their teams.  It had to be done, but it really sucks all the way around.

I'd just love to hear WTF these people were thinking in sweeping all of this under the rug and thinking it would never ever come to light.  And also, why they thought this should be covered up when they were dealing with dozens of defenseless children, who it sounds like were already broken from their current home life/situation, being abused in a horrific manner.  There's no justification or understanding...but it would be interesting to hear 'why' from these people.
  • The vacating of wins is conundrum to me as well.  I guess there's just no winners for those games.  :-/
  • It's all the "big boy" club mentality, group mentality.  If they can forget it, I can too.  I don't want to shake things up, it's not really hurting anyone...all justifying behavior.  AND ALL WRONG.

    Period.

I almost went rage-crazy on my FIL when he said that Paterno was unjustly criticized.  UM NO.
    image
  • Min - I'm not sure about who gets those wins but I do know it means Paterno is no longer the most winningest coach - he dropped to 8th.  He lost 111 wins from his record.

Posted by OFace So now your tune has changed? The vacating of the wins removes paterno as the winningest coach in NCAA history and it knocks penn state down a notch in the history books. Also all of the football players are allowed to transfer to other schools this season and even next season.
  • I never changed my tune, I always thought it was disgusting.

But to punish the current players for something they had no part in, is unfortunate---especially with lost scholarships.  Taking away the jist of the football program is just---but the brunt is on the players at this point.

If I heard correctly all current players are eligible for play anywhere else.  While I agree it does punish the current players, the NCAA really had no other way of going after the institution.  It's also not the first time current players are being punished for past players mistakes.

I don't really feel sorry for Paterno.  He COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS.  I feel sorry for his family that is dealing with the fallout.  I feel most for the children that could have never been abused if these leaders of men and pillars of society had been decent human beings.
  • If Paterno would've actually done something, it would've had a better chance of being stopped at the word "go".  I don't pretend to know what happened, but that certainly never did.

Agreed with all of this.  I also feel strangely happy that they took the statue down.

    Me too.

As soon as he failed to follow through on bringing the abuse to light and stopping that sicko, his legacy was built on a house of cards.  It's terrible for his family,  but I am glad they aren't fighting any of this or speaking out about how 'unfair' it is or any nonsense like that.
  • In a vacated win, no one claims a win. It should look like a 0-0 score, and there is usually a footnote indicating the win was vacated due to sanctions. Isn't harsh? Yes. But deserved.y so. I'm frustrated that there haven't been further announcements of charges and sanctions against the staff at Penn State (dean, etc) for their part in this mess. I hope this provides a small, tiny measure of comfort to the victims and their families.
  • I thought I heard his family was doing their own "investigation".  Pretty sure that is not going to help anything.

It seems that they're waiting for their trials to occur.  It says at the end of the statement that there can be more sanctions as the charges against others involved are settled.
  • I guess I just wish it was a little more swift. The evidence seems so damning but obviously, my opinion is one thing and due process is another.

YES, I feel like this is more warranted, I suppose they have to dole out punishment against the school in general before the new season starts.  But damn if it won't take forever against the people who actually PERPETRATED the crimes.

So you think it is harsh, but you don't even understand what happened? Stick to make up hunny. They did not revoke any current students scholarship, the school is losing the ability to recrute new students with NCAA scholarships. Any student already under scholarship will not be affected and are also being allowed to transfer and get a scholarship from another school.

i actually think the punishments and fines given to Penn State were acceptable. this wasn't tax evasion or a hazing. kids were raped. little chldren. and at a school. it's sad that it took as long as it did to investigate, but at least it is done.

steven a smith made an EXCELLENT point today on espn - where are the poeple coming out of the woodwork claiming their innocence and that they had no knowledge of what took place? maybe this is because most everyone heard that somehting happened, so no one is truly innocent there.

the students on the FB team are going to be allowed to transfer if they want to go to a different school, or they can stay and play football at Penn State. the FB team isn't going anywhere. also any officials in PS who want to go elsewhere can go work at a different place and PS has to pay their contracts. so really, it's an inconvenience to them but they are not going to lose anything. if I were playing for a school that had this new reputation, i would LOVE the chance to transfer.

it's too bad paterno isn't alive to see what happened.
  • Sadly, I find it convenient that Paterno checked out.  <<black hearted comment of the day

In Response to Re:Penn State sanctions were announced.:Sadly, I find it convenient that Paterno checked out.nbsp; lt;lt;black hearted comment of the day Posted by OFace Paterno's family did not allow an autopsy, a lot of conspiracy theorists believe he killed himself or that his son killed him so that he did not have to endure his legacy being torn apart.
  • although it may not have been swift, the repurcussion for not being able to recruit or award scholarships will be felt for a while.

btw, do i care that current football players are being punished?  you know what?  they.  are.  only.  football.  players.  maybe instead they can transfer elsewhere to play their stupid, stupidly revered game, or they can not play and try to get an education instead.

i also do not feel badly for paterno's family. his son worked with him at some point. no one ever heard of anything happening? really? guy had too much power.

i wonder how the idiots who were protesting a few months when this all came out in the media back feel about the shame they brought to their families. yes i used the shame word.
  • oface, you should shut up and just stick to the things you know -- shopping, nail polish, your father's bmw and your poor, rich, drunk mother in the carribbean.

  • I doubt those people feel ashamed, wz.  Sadly.
