[QUOTE]That's like UPMC saying they're a nonprofit because they call all their profit "surplus revenue".

<div>Well, 'the nonprofits can SO make a profit" is it's own weird hairy ball of beauracracy.

  • Can I ask a question that might make everyone's head spin right off?  B/c we all know I could care less about football and everything surrounding it, so I haven't paid attention to this, well really, at all.

How would exposing Sandusky as a pedophile have affected the program in any way?  I mean, why did the coverup get started to "protect the program".

"Hey, you're a criminal, go to jail."  I mean, I don't blame the church for not being able to look at someone and just know they're a pedophile, I blame them for the coverup.  ITell me what piece of info I'm missing please?

It wouldn't have affected the program.  In fact I think it would have made for an even stronger one.  It's sorta like when the president spoke about gay marriage and people listened.  If this "man amongst men" had said our kids are the most important thing think of how much of a statement it would have made.
  • I don't KNOW, Varuna!  I don't get that either.  I think it's only something people in the Holy Cult of Football understand.

I'm going to guess some of it is homophobia.
(I know that pedophile =/= homosexual.  I'm not sure the good ole boy network knows that)

i'm wondering if it was more along the lines of pretending it isn't happening so they didn't have to spend time with the paperwork involved. no one wanted to get their hands dirty, i suppose. and who knows what the repurcusions would be for anyone to have said anything - some people are too about themselves to put another person first, especially a child who should be seen and not heard.

that makes me wonder about the character of anyone who knew or heard a rumor or had any idea that something was oging on involving children. as a human being, the first instict should be to do something. i would never want to be associated with PSU after this in any context.
  • jerry sandusky used his influence as part of the football program to prey on children.  he used football facilities, football tickets, and all the prestige that comes from being part of psu football to prey upon children.

had he been exposed right when the janitor/the asst coach discovered him, the football program would have been painted as a facilitator of child rape.

  • Okay, good.  I'm glad I wasn't crazy and just missing something.

I don't understand why people aren't going to jail for the coverup (I know Paterno died, but isn't this bigger than just 2 people?  How are they not being charged with conspiracy?).  I also don't understand why the school is being fined by the NCAA, rather than a civil lawsuit from some of these kids for the coverup.

Why is the NCAA involved in this at all?
  • it wasn't a question of paperwork -- it was a question of people afraid for their jobs.  no one wanted to accuse a powerful man of doing a terrible thing, lest they not be believed and then fired.

  • the lawsuits are just starting.  ncaa is involved in the football aspect, and they may have just been quicker to hand down judgement.  the criminal and civil chargues and lawsuits may be coming soon.

  • Vicky Triponey, GBCK?  I just started reading her stuff.  There seems to be some controversy over her career.
  • I still don't know how the asst coach could sleep at night with what he saw, and not running to the police.

  • she was the vp of student affairs, and clashing with paterno nearly ended her career.

a temporary janitor and a 27yo assistant never stood a chance.

  • Heck, we are all tested in some form or fashion. Do we do the right thing or do we look the other way? At the end of the day you have to answer to your conscience and your God.

I do wonder what would have happened if it was all women that knew, and what they would have done with the same information.

A million times this.  I don't even know how his father (a DOCTOR) could have advised him to do nothing.  The janitor was a war vet and said it was the worst thing he'd ever seen.

    YES, her, thanks.
I haven't read much, but I was interested...
