Steak too heavy for lunch?

Hi all, I'm a long-time lurker in need of some advice.  We are planning a lunch reception for our wedding in the spring, and my FI and I disagree about the potential menu.  Our venue is known for its excellent steaks, but I worry that steak will be too heavy for lunch (12:30p).  We aren't big fans of fish or chicken.  Maybe pork or lamb would be a lighter and more lunch-appropriate.  Thoughts?  How would you feel about being served a petite filet at lunchtime?

Re: Steak too heavy for lunch?

  • Dh and I had a lunch reception and filet mignon was one of the options we offered. We also offered lamb chops and some sort of fish (I can't believe I forget what right now!). Although I don't usually even eat lunch, in that kind of scenario, I'd eat a fairly large lunch and then just skip dinner or go very light on dinner... so, no, I don't think steak is too heavy.
  • I was at Longhorn the other day for lunch and saw a lot of people eating steak. If you are concerned, pair it with some lighter sides and apps.
  • If steak was too heavy for lunch, there would be tons of restaurants out of business. Some people prefer heavier meals and others prefer lighter meals. You won't be able to please everyone and will go crazy trying. Lamb and pork however are not considered universally appealing. Steak sounds good to me if you want to serve it. What do your guests like? They are the ones whose opinions matter, not random people online who have completely different views and "expectations" (for lack of a better word) than what your guests are used to.
  • I would be more than happy to be served steak for lunch.... some people have it for breakfast. :)

  • nope.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Mmm, steak.  I could go for a steak right now, and it's not even 9am here.  You can always serve a smaller cut of steak, maybe a tritip instead of a 12oz sirloin.  Something like that.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Thanks everyone!  It seems that the consensus is that steak is a go.  I told my FI what you all said, and he has been gleefully gloating all morning - he was right AND he gets to eat steak.
