Fiance Thinks A Gap Is Necessary?

My fiance and his family think that we HAVE to have a gap in between the wedding and the reception. We are going to be to DIY most (or possibly) all of the food and basically everything else too. My FML has many friends who are going to help out with decorating and food and everything else. We get the place we rented from 1 PM on Friday night until 9 AM on Sunday morning. My fiance thinks we should have our reception at around 3:30 or 4 and then having the reception at 6 or so. Our reception site is about 25 minutes from the ceremony site but about 10 minutes from where most of the guests live.

Anyways, my fiance is a traditionalist and does not want to see me to do pictures before the ceremony. He thinks we need at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours in between to do pictures and have all of the food and everything ready to go. I understand that most people are against gaps, but then again, most people have caterers setting stuff up before the reception begins. We will not have that. What do you think? Could we have some punch and appetizers in the basement of the church for about 45 minutes or so and then have the guests travel directly to the reception, while my FML's army of friends are setting out food and getting everything else ready? Or will we have enough time the day before and earlier in the morning the day of to do it all??

I'm just confused because I think that we would be able to get it all done and not have to have a gap in between...however, then again, as my fiance keeps telling me, I have not been to many weddings so I don't REALLY know how much work goes into them and how much there is to do. I feel bad because I know how many people on this site think it's horrible, but to my fiance and his family it is absolutely necessary and there seems to be nothing wrong with it?
