Cocktail Hour Snacks

My fiance is completely against spending a couple hundred dollars on displays for guests to snack on during our cocktail hour while we are getting pictures taken.  Our caterer brought up the idea of peanuts and pretzels.  I do not think this is sufficient and wonder if anyone has done something similiar to this?

We are anticipating 200 guests and scattered high boy (cocktail) tables during the cocktail hour.

Any ideas that are classy and not trashy?

Re: Cocktail Hour Snacks

  • I guess peanuts and pretzels are better than nothing, but if it's really a big deal to "spend a couple hundred dollars" to properly host your guests perhaps you should shorten your cocktail hour and do your photos before the ceremony.
  • What about doing cheese and crackers and fruit to snack on?  I agree peanuts and pretzels is a little too informal - like bar food.  You can purchase big chunks of cheese at Costco or BJs and have a few platters assembled for people.

  • Displays?  You can have decent foods without having displays.  Even though the article I posted earlier frowned upon it, you can do cheese and cracker trays, or things like sausages and meatballs brought out.

Honestly, I would rather you do a decent cocktail hour and forget about favors (if favors were in your budget).

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • If you're serving drinks, I would serve something more substantial or you're gonna have some folks get drunk quickly. But as long as you give them something you're, at least from an etiquette standpoint, covered.
