When to register?

Im sending my STDs in 2 weeks - which will be about 9 months ahead. I have our wedding website on the STDs - it has a registry section (which right now just says coming soon...) When should we register, is 9 months too soon? Before we send them so they see it right away when they get the STD? What did you guys do? (PS. I will have a shower later on, so I guess it will be on the invite for that.)

This has come up a lot, and it seems to be the rule that registry info never goes on any invitation - it appears to be a little "I invite you and I want gifts". I would say register about a month or two before your shower - that is the first time people will be shopping for you two. If you do it now, the store might have discontinued items and people can't find what you registered for. (Think of how much stock changes during and after christmas) I would put it on your website when you do it, and people will know to check there, and then your friends/bridal party/ etc can spread it word of mouth. I'm 8 months out and I've already started registering. We sent out our STDs two months ago and after people received them the all started bugging me about where I was registered. I got tired of telling them I hadn't registered yet so I just went ahead and started a registry. Plus it's nice because every now and then I'll just be sitting on the couch and I'll think of something brilliant to register for, so I can just add it right away instead of waiting and forgetting later. Some items will probably be discontinued by the wedding, but that's okay I can always update the registry later. I haven't posted my registry info on the website yet though, I will wait until a few months before the wedding to do that.That being said, I don't think it's necessary to register until a few months before your wedding, unless people drive you crazy with questions about it

I'd probably open the registries about 4-5 months out unless you plan on having an engagement party or other pre-wedding party before then.  As long as you're registered before your shower invites go out, you're good.  My guess is that stock will change after the first of the year so I wouldn't put too much on a registry between now and then.
