October 2012 Weddings

ROOM block issues!

Hey ladies so I have my wedding booked for the Grandview in Poughkeepsie for October, and my guests are all staying at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and some of my guests have already called the venue and there are no additional room available for the night of my wedding outside of the room block, and only a few rooms available the night before. I am having a day wedding so most guests are staying two nights. and the only rooms they have available for the night before are all smoking rooms.. Help! Has anyone had this problem? Should I just go to another hotel. It stinks because the whole reason I booked this venue (or a big reason) is because it was so close to the hotel land you get free rooms with your booking the venue. Also there is a trolley that transports guests to and from the hotel.

I didn't think this should be a problem at all considering the wedding is not until 7 months from now! lol

Re: ROOM block issues!

  • Wow that sucks :(  Is there another hotel close by?  Maybe you can have 2 options for hotels?

  • I would call the hotel and find out what if you can get anymore information.  If not, there are several other hotels nearby.

You are probably running into the problem because this area gets a lot of tourists in at that time to look at the leaves.  Plus with all of the colleges in the area, there are alot of activities going on that time of year.  This is also wedding season and the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel can have 6 or 8 weddings in a weekend.

If you need any help, let me know.  I work about a block away from the hotel and hae lived in the area for many years.

  • I agree with Cathy, did you call the hotel to see whtt they said, or are you just basing this off what your guests are telling you??
Im also getting married at the Grandview, but the weekend before you, i hope this doesnt happen to me.
Now im going to stress about it until the time comes, i know it says they will only block off 10 rooms at a time and Im sure no one in my family has booked their rooms yet.
  • I did call the hotel but all they could say was that I have my room block when it gets full they can open another block of rooms, but for the friday night they can only block off 8 rooms and they are all smoking.. i think when it gets closer there will be more rooms available if other people don't fill up their room blocks but its crazy to think that people may have to stay in smoking room (including myself) ewww.
@Cathy thank you for your help I am also looking into the Holiday Inn express its only 4 mins away. I am actually from the Hudson Valley but have since moved but I really appreciate you offering.
@ mpjf I would just call the hotel and check and also ask your guest to start booking their rooms. I added my hotel information to my wedding website.

  • I'll def call them, thanks for the heads up!
I sent out my STDs in January and the hotel info was on there, so hopefully people start booking now and not wait until the last minute.

  • I'm also an October Poughkeepsie bride!! I also ran into a snag with hotel room blocks, but I think this is mainly because my wedding is over Columbus Day weekend. When I called Holiday Inn Express back in February, they told me that they had zero rooms available due to multiple weddings being held in town that weekend. I ended up using the Hampton Inn. One option is that even if you can't reserve a full block somewhere, guests should be fine staying at a different location. There are plenty of B&Bs, inns, and hotel options in the area. Some of my guests will use the block we reserved, but others will stay elsewhere due to preference, financial reasons, etc. Don't worry! Your guests will definitely find somewhere to stay overnight.
