  • I'd given hints that were ignored, ha, but he did take note that I don't like yellow gold, so that's good. Otherwise, though, I was surprised, and I love it. :)

  • I was completely surprised!! But FI is really good at buying me jewelry and he did an awesome job---it's exactly what I would have chosen!

  • Originally he said that he wanted me to show him 3 or 4 that I really loved and he would pick one. Then I found my ring and was like "buy that one." We both loved it and it was under his budget so it was a no-brainer.

This.  We looked at our budget and bought the ring on Dec. 4th.  My FI told me the surprise would come when he proposed.  That was a *huge* surprise.  I wasn't expecting him to drive 10 hours to propose to me in front of my family on Christmas Day.  :)

  • I gave hints. Square cut, white gold. Otherwise, I was totally surprised. He did such a good job!

  • I always knew I wanted my birthstone incorporated into my ring.  A few months before I got engaged I went around to some jewelry store to see who does custom pieces and found the setting I loved.  Brought his mom and my matron of honor back to look and we all liked a similiar one better, then his mom went with him.  So basically I was involved with picking it out :-)

  • I was actually really nervous on this front. FI and I have been together for 8+ years now, and the only jewelry that he has gotten me his mom "helped" him pick out.

First it was a white and yellow gold heart necklace. I hated it, but, with time it has grown on me and it is something I wear quite often now.  Next, was a while gold bracelet of hearts...like littleheats all connecting all of the way around the wrist.  I was beginning to sense a theme. Defintely, not my favorite piece ever. Finally, it was a while gold ring with  two hearts interlocking.  Unfortunately (truly, I would never lose something on purpose) I lost this ring in college. The weird thing is it was at his apartment. We have always suspected his roommate - she was a weirdo and I know she was a frequent pawner.

So, after that fiasco I had to tell him I really love that he wants to buy me nice things, but I am just a more modern, simple girl and hearts really aren't my thing.

Just a few years later I have an engagement ring that I love and I am proud to say he came full circle and picked it out all on his own! Yay!

  • I told him what I wanted and we went to look at rings together once just to get my ring size.  We didn't go to the store where he'd be buying it from.  I told him princess cut, platinum (white gold and I don't get along), trellis setting.  I also showed him a picture of the Tiffany Lucida ring as inspiration.  He took it from there, and my ring looks almost identical to the Tiffany ring (and probably cost much much less LOL). I absolutely LOVE my ring!

  • I gave a few hints but FI ultimately picked out my ring (which I LOVE.) He took his sister along to "model" the different styles but he selected the design (and she helped select the awesome diamond.)

Did the whole thing by himself. I love the ring, totally my style. But it's such a unique style of ring that I didn't have any choice in my wedding band and I'm not in love with the way the e-ring and wedding band look together. We have to get them altered slighty. Any ideas on about how long this takes, we'd like to get it done before the wedding if possible.

  • I sent him pictures of rings I liked.  I told him I wanted yellow gold, round solitaire diamond and for it to be raised off the ring. He went into a jewlerry store to have my Pandora bracelet cleaned and saw "my ring". he brought his dad back to see it and bought it the next day. i found a size chart online and told him my finger is a size 8.  the ring he bought was a 5 so he had it resized...turns out the sizing chart was waaay off becuase i'm actually a 5!   he likes to say the ring was meant for me because it already came in my size.

  • Amanda - your post made me smile (But not the creepy roommate!). I always point out heart stuff to FI and say 'See that? NOT MY THING!!!!" ;)

We talked about it, and looked together. I found a few inexpensive rings that I thought were nice, and appropriate for me. He refused to buy the one I found and liked at Wal-Mart. When we stumbled across this set, we ordered it immediately. He asked me to marry him as we ordered, he asked me again when it arrived.

We went shopping together because he wanted to know what I liked.  He picked the store (an awesome local store) and I tried on a bunch of different rings and got sized.  I knew I wanted white gold or platinum and not a princess cut solitaire.  We both liked my e-ring the best out of all of the ones I tried on.  He did a bunch of research and picked out the center diamond all on his own.  I didn't really give him an indication of size, but what he picked is perfect!
  • haha my birthday present last year was for him to go with me to look at rings.  I was about 4 yrs in and getting antsy!!

  • FI picked it out completely by himself! I love the ring, I think if I'd looked at 1000 rings I would of picked the same one. He got extra bonus points for that!

  • When we bought our house we were unofficially engaged.  I made a wishlist that had exactly one ring on it.  I wanted a very specific ring.  He got exactly what I wanted, only much bigger!

  • Mine was a complete surprise. I didn't even know he was going to pop the question. He has picked all the jewelry he's bought me alone and he ALWAYS knows what I will like.

  • We went together to get ideas. Then my mother provided us with some old family jewelry so we could take the diamonds from them. We found a ring we both liked but it only was for one diamonds and we had three. We asked if we could have it made for three diamonds and the jeweler said that they could do a custom ring. That was the end of my involvement. They made a wax mold of the ring and FI saw it but not me. I was even completely surprised by the timing of the engagement.
  • We went shopping together.  Like Jessi, we do EVERYTHING together. We finally saw one that we both fell in love with.  He didn't buy it immediately, we went back the next week and he made in wait in Macy's while he bought it.  He told me I was not allowed near the entrance to peak at him buying it either.  He is so funny.  :)

The first one was a ring I had mentioned I liked... it is called two hearts one love..

and sure enough our 1 year anniversary he proposed (with it) .with our names engraved onthe inside (Melissa and Thomas) I still love it... he told me then that it was a temporary...

we went shopping for wedding bands a few months ago and we together picked out a set... because the E-ring he originally got meis unique and did nothave a matching band, and would be hard to find one that did match...

    This is the new one

    VERY happy I am :D
  • We went shopping together and I picked out several I liked. The saleslady wrote all the style numbers down and I insisited she put a big star next to my favorite. So when FI went back a few weeks later, she remembered him and still had the notes about the rings I had picked out. He purchased my favorite, originally saying he didn't like it but knew it would make me happy. Now he loves it, especially since its "so shiny and blingy" (his exact words). HAHA!

  • My mom and sister helped FI pick out my ring. They told him they knew I wanted an emerald (I've never wanted a diamond--it's been an emerald for me since I was a teenager!), then he found three rings that he liked. My mom and sister helped him make the final selection. I couldn't possibly love my ring more than I do.

  • I helped!  I'm a jewelry fanatic and FI knew this.  Thus, he was more than happy to have my input.

I was helping him without even knowing it... :P

He proposed with a family heirloom, his late grandmother's ring. He said it would be mine now and wanted it resized. When we were at the store, the sales lady we were working with offered to give us a little tutorial on diamonds because I had no idea what the Cs were...and that would teach me something about my ring. Well we had fun and then I started trying on things I liked...3 months later he surprised me by proposing AGAIN this time with a new ring.
He said he never wanted to alter his grandmother's ring and instead tricked me into helping him pick out a ring. :P  He even made lies during the 3 months saying that their's a shortage of rhodium or whatever that was needed to resize the other ring. So i pretty much picked out the band but he picked out the diamond a separate time.

    Anniversary

  • We actually have a ridiculous e-ring story.

We got engaged when I was really young (19).  When he first proposed (Aug. of 2008) there was no ring - it was spur of the moment, not at all planned out.  He gave me a ring for Xmas of that year.  But it was just kind of a "for now" ring.  It was yellow gold (I HATE yellow gold) and it was his mom's ring.  His mom and I don't speak.  It was her ring for her marriage to her step dad - it lasted 3 years and he beat her and did cocaine.  I wore it for awhile but eventually just stopped wearing it because I wasn't comfortable wearing it. It felt like bad luck.

fast forward to 2010 and I was tired of waiting for FI to buy me a ring.  I think in his mind he wanted to be able to go in and pay for a ring in cash.  so, my mom and I went to the jewelry store and I picked out the ring I liked, opened an account with the store, ordered the ring, and told FI he would be making payments.  looking back I super regret it because I think FI wanted to pick it out and surprise me but he jokes it made his job easier.  he held on to it for about a week and then "re-proposed" to me with it.

  • Oh boy, this was a process, LOL! FI secretly recruited my mother to get him ring ideas. Mom and I looked while we were out shopping, and she totally had me convinced that it was my idea. Then she emailed everything, including pictures and contact information for specific people at the stores, to FI. He went alone, and the ring he picked was actually one I had tried on. But it looked so much better when he gave it to me that I didn't even recognize it! To this day, I'm still thrilled by all the effort he put into the 'conspiracy' before he proposed!

  • I definitely picked out my own ring and I know I did. FI was trying to be all sneaky about it. :) Though he would have picked my ring though, except he would have gotten me a bigger size. So I am happy I was able to direct him to the smaller (my my style) size.

    ~MARRIED 10.11.12~
  • I had looked for quite awhile and couldn't really find anything I liked online.  While we were in Florida for a vow renewal for mutual friends of ours (they've been married 12 years!) we looked a bit in person down there and when we came home we went together to Jared (yes, please insert the annoying commercial here ;-)) and I found a setting I really liked so we decided to go through the process of getting the center diamond and getting it sized, they told us to come back in an hour and it would be ready, so we went to dinner and I was bummed because I told him it would go into the closet and I'd never see it again (I know, I was being horrible) and when we got back we checked to make sure that the set fit and he unhooked it, got down on one knee in the store and made everyone in the store cry....including me. :-) <3

  • I've told them before but - FI wanted me to give him ideas so I did.  I like small simple... he went to Kay's to see rings in person, and they basically told him he couldn't afford anything they had (he's a big redneck, thick NC mtn accent).  After that, he made me go with him.  Actually he made me go into a jewelry store with him, and I refused to try any on.  I did like this one, but we left.  Then he made me go to other store, and I found my ring.  I loved it and we decided on a smaller stone.

Few months later (still no ring), he decided to upgrade the diamond as a surprise, but he was so excited since he got it a lot cheaper in NC then MD he showed me.  I finally got it 2 months later, def not small or simple, but I love it!

FI is really bad at surprises.
