Wild horses?

This is one thing we haven't ever done on our OBX vacations.  Since we'll be out for two weeks this time, I think we're going to try it.  Any tips/suggestions?  I found http://wildhorsetour.com/ but was sort of overwhelmed with the choices.

Ohhhh I can tell you everything my dear :)

Carova is just north of Corolla, which is where my brother lives and they are all over the place.  If you already have a 4x4 you can save the money and just drive around yourself and find them.  I mean the tour is neat b/c they probably give you the full history of the horses and all but I would rather have the freedom of driving around myself....and of course taking a park on the beach and having the waves crash in :)  One thing that I cannot stress enough, is that it's against the law to come within 50 feet of them.  Tourist think it's soooooo cute to feed them potato chips and other human snacks and that is bad bad bad for the horses....they lose their dependency of the land and thus turn to humans for food sources.  Ohhhh and of course b/c THIS can happen when you don't follow the rules, lol:

I'm sorry to laugh.....ok not really....because the signs couldn't be any clearer on what the laws are regarding the horses and if people choose to ignore them, well this is what happens.  I don't mean to sound like an a-hole, but a lot of "tourists" don't understand that the horses are Federally protected and that they are W-I-L-D animals....so my protective instincts shoot out from everywhere.  I grew up with horses so I am very fond of the Corolla horses and donate to the charities when the pocketbook is a little heavier....which seems really light lately with all of this wedding planning :)

On FB, they have the "Corolla Wild Horse Fund" where you can get more info and they also links to other info on the horses too.  The horses mainly come out in late afternoon early evening hours and will sometimes walk right down to the ocean and just hang out.  It's really neat.

Here are some pics from my brother's house:

Whichever route you choose to take, you are in for a real treat! It is something truly amazing to see and you will have lots of memories for years to come.  Enjoy!

I get it.  FI and I are pretty "green" and hate seeing nature disturbed.  It sort of serves them right for getting too close. ;)

We're debating on renting the jeep for two hours or going on a guided tour.  It sounds fun to drive on our own, but the history part would be interesting too.  I'm stalking their facebook page.

Thanks for the info.  We will have to make this a "must see."

We had a group go two days before our wedding and we loved it.  We went with Wild Horse Adventure Tours and they were great.  I would recommend getting a guide if you haven't driven out in that area on your own before - we would have been lost for sure, as most of the horses we saw were a couple of "blocks" in from the surf.  The guides knew all the right spots to go to find the horses. We saw at least a dozen, it was awesome!!

PS The temperature can be much different out there - we were staying in Corolla and the temp on the 4x4 beaches was at least 10 degrees cooler!
