Stand during Rite of Marriage?

Hello!! I'm getting married in 2 weeks and the Priest has not gotten back to me on whether the congretation at the ceremony should stand or sit during the Rite of Marriage. Does anyone know? I know they should stand during the Prayers of the Faithful but I'm not sure about the rest of that portion of the ceremony. Many of our guests are not Catholic so I'm trying to help them out on our ceremony program! Thank you ladies!

Re: Stand during Rite of Marriage?

  • I think technically its called for the congregation to stand, but many priests have them sit so they can see better. The priest can ask them to stand if necessary, so you can skip the direction in the program.
  • I think our WP stood, but everyone else stayed in their seats.

  • I think people just kind of stay seated (unless they are told to stand,) since it comes right afte the homily.

  • Thank you ladies!! I think I'll assume they will sit and like one of you said, assume that if the Priest wants everyone to stand he can tell them to. SO glad to get the program done!! :)

  • I'm pretty sure everyone stayed seated, except the WP, at our wedding.  But like others said, the priest will tell eveyone to stand if he wants them to!  Most priests are pretty good about that, since they know there are almost always non-Catholics at weddings.  GL with everything!
