Wednesday Questions

Inspired by and because I'm cooped up with a baby with a cold.

When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better?

Any remedies (home, otc, etc.) that you swear by?

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)?

Any others you'd like to add:

    Answering my own questions:

    1. When I'm sick, I always watch Sense and Sensibility (with Emma Thompson). I really enjoy the movie, but I've seen it enough times that I can relax and watch without worrying about dozing off. It's also relaxing, so I don't get myself worked up laughing or reciting the lines or anything. When I was little, I did the same thing with The Sound of Music, so clearly it is a thing with me.

    2. I'm all about fluids when I'm sick. Lots of water, juice and tea. When H is sick, I drive him nuts, because I keep pushing the fluids at him, too.

    3. The sickest I've been in recent memory was a couple of summers ago. I got a bad throat infection, and then had really tough side effects from the antibiotics they gave me. I was miserable for a good 5 or 6 days, when all was said and done.

  • When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better?  Gingerale.  Its the only time i ever drink soda, much less soda with sugar.  and it has to be canada dry brand.

Any remedies (home, otc, etc.) that you swear by?  alka seltzer cold medicine.  knocks you out cold (even the BS "non-drowsy") but it works and lets me get the sleep i need.

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)?  last winter....i think the diet and exercise have helped ward off illness!

I don't really have anything I always do when I'm sick...just watch tv, I guess.

I'm big on fluids -- gingerale or OJ, in particular.  If I have a lot of congestion, I take Mucinex.  Sudafed non-drying is also good, but (at least around here) is hard to find.  If I have a cough, it's gotta be Delsum.

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)?
The last time I was REALLY sick was Jan 2011.  I had bronchitis, and it was MISERABLE.  I actually got pretty sick several times that year...2010-2011 fall/winter was a bad one for me.

  • When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better? I throw on my Disney DVDs and sit under a pile of blankets like a little kid.

Any remedies (home, otc, etc.) that you swear by? Honestly, I just take some advil and it usually helps whatever. I also drink a lot of tea and head to bed super early (like 7:30 or 8).

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)?

Maybe winter of 2008? I had to take 2 half days off of classes in college. I work at a grocery store on the weekends, more often when I was in HS and I do a lot of bagging groceries, among other dirty jobs. When the bag sticks, I like my finger to wet it to get them un-stuck. People that I tell are grossed out by it all of the time but I really credit that to bumping up my immune system. I'm also a huge believer in the 5 second rule. I havent gotten the flu shot in YEARS (maybe like 7 or 8?). I just don't get sick very often, and if I feel something coming on I skip a few days at the gym and head to bed early for a few days.

  • When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better?

Nothing specific, just stay in bed, watch TV, and try to get lots of sleep.

I've found that Mucinex works great anytime I have congestion.  I used to always do Dayquil/Nyquil and that worked pretty well, but now they have commercials on TV that point out that the Nyquil doesn't help with congestion/stuffy nose.  So, the last time H was sick I got a different type of cold medicine (I think it was the Walgreens version of Tylenol) that covered all symptoms.  He said it tasted AWFUL but did really work.

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)?

Last winter, my H was sick for several days with a yucky flu-type thing.  I thought it would pass me by, but I got it a few days later and was sick for about 4-5 days.  It was pretty awful.

After that incident, the next time H got sick (over this past Christmas) I followed him around our condo and Lysol-ed EVERYTHING he touched.  It worked, because I still never caught whatever he had.
  • When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better? [QUOTE]When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)? I got food poisoning over the summer (unfortunately, it was when FI was cooking me dinner for my birthday.  He felt so so horrible).  I was still traveling to MN for work every week, so I was absolutely pitiful.

OMG. I just had to say that IMHO full blown food poisoning is worse than any other sickness. Ever. Hands Down.
DH & I  both have had severe food poisoning once in our adult lives (before we met) and we often joke that if we made it through that...we can make it through ANYTHING. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />
  • Being sick takes me out of lots of jobs as a singer, so I'm a bit of a germaphobe and do preventive maintenance.

I swear by Juice Plus. (dehydrated fruits and veggies in a pill).

Also, when I feel something weird--- airborne. It has kept me from getting sick a lot.

A pharmacist friend says both shouldn't be taken together because of too much of vitamin a, so I don't overload, but I swear by airborne.
  • When you're sick, do you have a ritual or something in particular that you do or that makes you feel better? We have like 70 episodes of Jeopardy on DVR, so I watch a ton of that.  And Criminal Minds.

Any remedies (home, otc, etc.) that you swear by? When I was a kid, my mom made us gargle salt water like crazy whenever we were sick, and now that's my go-to quick fix for when I'm feeling a little under the weather.

When was the last time you got really, really sick (like out for a couple of days sick, not stuffy nose or whatever sick)? I got walking pneumonia one of the first years that I was in a school for field experience in college.  It was pretty scary, and I definitely take more health precautions now!

Not really, I just don't do anything productive.

Any remedies (home, otc, etc.) that you swear by?
Vics always makes me feel better.

3 years ago, I had a weird throat infection that wasn't strep, but they put me on antibiotics anyway, which worked. I had a fever that broke while watching the House season premier, and I thought I was going to die. Although I prefer the story from, probably junior high, when I had the flu and ate nothing but soup and ice cream for 3 days while watching the first two seasons of 7th Heaven.

  • Growing up my grandma would shove zinc and vitamin c when we would get a cold. I don't do the zinc anymore because in nursing school I learned that for zinc to really work you have to take it at the very onset of a cold. And most of us don't even realize when we first get a cold. For sore throat I swear by ricola in the pink bag! Everyone that I have reccommended it to has only had good things to say.
