Catholic Weddings

So frustrated!!

We began the wedding planning with our church about a year ago (wedding is April 21). We booked and paid for the church, we've gone on our Engaged Encounter retreat, gotten all the docs in, took our Focuss test, and have not heard back from the priest!!!!
Last we had spoken was early February, after we took the Focus and are now waiting for the results. I guess the place they normally send it doesn't do it anymore, etc, etc. But now, I have questions regarding the ceremony, whether a song has been approved for the bridal entrance, rehearsal info, etc and No Call Backs!!!
I understand our priest is busy and has alot going on, but I'm trying to balance everything that needs to be done on everyone else's schedule. Example: I need to know if the song is approved, so I can go over the music with the ceremony musicians. I need to know what the rehearsal schedule is, to plan the rehearsal dinner. I need to know anything else that's needed for the ceremony, to be sure I include everyone necessary.
This is the only part of the wedding process that has really stressed me out. Leaving messages and not getting a call in return. I don't want to bug, or annoy, or whatever else you want to call it, I just Want Answers!!!! Cry
Thank you for letting me vent!

Re: So frustrated!!

  • maybe you can call the church secretary?  Lent is an extremely busy time for priests, they usually cant think about much else until after easter.
  • Oh, I feel you. I know how they say your wedding isn't as important to anyone else as it is to you, but all adults of commonsense have to understand how complicated they are, and how important it therefore is that calls be returned, etc.

Right now, we "still have tons of time," so I'm taking the approach that all the adults involved have all the information they need/want, know the consequences if they drop the ball, and know how to reach me. Then they need to be adults. This includes 2 Priests involved. I don't know what I'll dow when we don't "have tons of time." I'll delegate more to the procrastinators who will make/have made that time more stressful, for starters. I might just refuse some appointments. Not sure about the Priests' delays, though, as they can just cancel the wedding, unlike caterers, florists, etc.
  • Is there a music director at your church?  That person would be more able to help you with the music question.

And FWIW, the church where I got married usually waits until just a month or so out to have the "final meeting" to plan the ceremony.  I know it is stressful, but you are only going to make yourself more upset by letting it get to you.

  • I didn't need to talk to the priest to set the rehearsal time--I did that through the secretary.
  • Echoing others, is there someone besides the priest you can talk to in order to arrange some of this stuff? I know lots of parishes have marriage/sacrament coordinators, a secretary who does the calendar, a music director, a wedding coordinator, etc. Those people could probably help with some of your more pressing questions that would leave you feeling less frustrated.

  • I'm feeling you on that one. We have been trying to get in touch with Father for about 2 months, and I've even pulled him aside at RCIA one night to get our annulments started, but he's yet to call us back. FI has called at least 5 times and me at least 3. It's really frustrating.
  • Do you have a specific priest who is working with you? We had a bit of trouble getting started, lots of left messages and one forgotten meeting, but once our wedding was is the books (and we have yet to put any money down or get any papers in), a Deacon was assigned to help with our preparations, and he has been very helpful. It did make things easier that he gave us his cell and home phone numbers as well as an email address. He told us no matter how small or big a question or concern was, to get in touch with him.
