music help

Almost done with all my readings/song choices, but am having a hard time choosing music for the procession of gifts... I've narrowed it down to 3, but not totally sure they're appropriate for this part, nor which one i want yet.
Here they are:
1. We are many parts
2. When love is found
3. Love divine, all loves excelling
Do these fit with the presentation of gifts, and does anyone have a favorite? Likely more than half of my guests aren't Catholic so I'm trying to find some that aren't too specifically Catholic, if that makes sense.
TIA!

My sister sang "Ave Verum Corpus" by Mozart as a soprano solo during presentation of the gifts.  We opted for something related to the Eucharist and both my husband and I tend to prefer more traditional hymns, so that's how we decided on ours :)  I do hesitate to recommend something "less specifically Catholic" for something as central to our faith as the Eucharist.  I think of your above choices, 1 and 3 are probably your best bets!  Due to my aforementioned bias... I'd probably vote for 3 overall :)  Our own musical selections are in my bio here.

Catholic Wedding Help could probably better guide you on the process of thinking through music selections...

From the order of a Catholic Wedding Mass:

Presentation and Preparation of the Gifts

The assembly sits and sings the Offertory Song while the altar is prepared and the gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar. According to the Rite of Marriage, "other gifts for the needs of the Church or the poor" may also be brought to the altar at this time. The bride and groom, or others from the assembly, may bring these gifts forward. When the priest says, "Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father," the assembly stands.

  • I think Love Divine is lovely, and while I am not really familiar with the first song, I am extremely suspicious of any song that has "we" in the title, since I would bet money that the rest of the lyrics are going to focus on US instead of focusing on GOD and His Majesty and adoring Him.

Our singer recommended Gifts of Love.  I was unsure of song choices as well.  But more so that FI or I didn't have favorite hymns that we wanted played.

  • Yeah...not a fan of the lyrics. (But I also don't like just about anything by Marty Haugen, so....)

  • Lalaith,

I agree with you that lots of songs are "self glorifying", and I dont' care for a lot of them. But sometimes, these songs that use "we" are just repeating scripture from the opposite perspective.

Here are a couple verses that come to mind:

1 Cor 10: 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood ofChrist? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

1 Cor 12: 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

This song says nothing that is bad theology. I don't think its self-glorifying as much as it is just repeating what the scripture says.

  • Well said, Carrie!

<div>Do you think it would be a good choice for presentation of the gifts though? I'll admit I do not "know" the music as I should and got to mass early last week, flipped through the music books, and found some songs that I liked and thought might work. </div>
