Why/How Does a Certificate Make Your Wedding Legal?

Hi, there,

I know this is an offbeat question, but we've got a friend from Chicago we want to perform our wedding, and he digs the idea, but he's not licensed. Since he doesn't live in FL, I don't think he actually _can_ get licensed. And honestly, I don't want him to pay for said license.

If he never takes a course and never gets licensed, who will know? And what does it really affect? No one's gonna ask him to furnish his officiant card, will they?

    Why don't you just have him share the officiant duties with someone who can legally marry you?  Someone has to sign the license and I personally would rather be 100% positive the union is legal.

    Anyone can officiate a marriage as long as they are a notary. If you friend isn't a notary it will not be legal. They have to use their offical government stamp and then send the marriage license is sent back to the courthouse.
