Resizing Rings without resizing the band

Hi there,

I just got engaged and my ring is a little too big at times since my fingers swell a lot in this weather.  I don't want to have it resized but have heard that there are some options for getting a "hold" or "stay" inserted (something I could remove later).  Has anyone had this done or have recommendations on where to get it done??

Thanks!  I have a fear of it just falling off my finger!

If it is too big and could fall off, you will most likely want to get it resized.  If you wait, there may be a cost associated with it.

My ring was too large and I grappled with the same issue!  I ended up going a quarter size down, which turned out to be perfect.  It can move around my finger if I am cold, without fear of falling off, and it is not uncomfortably small when my fingers swell in the heat.

Mine is a little big - almost to the point of falling off, but not quite.  I didn't get it re-sized because it's tough to get off some mornings and in the summer.  They do make things you can stick in the band that are removable - I used to have a plastic thingy that just slipped over a different ring in the past, it's just a temporary thing though.  They make metal ones, too, but I've heard they can damage the band.  If your ring truly is large enough to slip off, though, I would consider getting it a 1/4 size smaller.

They say that a properly fitting ring should be comfortable, except that it should be snug, to the the point that it catches at the 2nd knuckle.  That way, when you're fingers swell or get narrower, depending on the temperature, your knuckle still protects the ring from going anywhere.  My fingers swell alot in the summer or when I work out, and in the winter, when it's cold, my fingers get much skinnier... my ring fits very comfortably in both scenarios, though it turns a little bit when my fingers are cold.  However, because I found the best fit that is a little snug over the knuckle, I feel very secure with it on.

Your jeweler should be able to help you determine the best fit for your ring.

I've heard of these sizing ball that can be soldered onto the inside of a ring that will make it fit tighter, but not really change the size so that you can still get it over your knuckle (I'm assuming they can also be taken off easily). I don't have any personal experience, but have been considering these because my ring spins a lot, but there are times when my finger swells too.
