Transplant to NKY

Hello ladies! I moved here several months ago. This is my first winter here. I found plenty of things to do in the spring/fall/summer when I can get outside and enjoy the many parks and things in the area. But I'm not a fan of the cold, so playing outside isn't my idea of fun.

What do you do here in the winter??? My boyfriend (not engaged yet) and I are a little older - 30s and 40s - so we aren't necessarily in to the younger bar scene. Can you recommend museums, restaurants, bars, anything to do? Preferably in NKY but we aren't afraid to drive across the river.

Thanks for any thoughts! I'm just looking for something new for us to do.

There are a lot of bars in the Mainstrasse area of Covington, also check out Newport on the Levee (in Newport) for bars. What kind of food do you like to eat? I live in NKY and would be glad to suggest some local places.

There really aren't any museums in NKY, but there are a few in Cincinnati. The Taft Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, Contemporary Arts Center, National Underground Railroad Center, Union Terminal.

    HTH!

Good suggestion! It really is a lot of fun. The younger crowd really comes out during the summer (mostly college kids), but its still a good time!

Thanks ladies! We do like Hofbrauhaus but I'm not sure we've ever gone at night! (Yes, we are that lame.) Is Chez Nora fun - good music?

We like most kinds of food. I'm not a fan of Indian but otherwise we're good. We've found a great little Vietnamese place and a good Mexican joint. We haven't tried the Riverside Korean restaurant but hear it's good. Thoughts? Are there any good kabob or Middle Eastern restaurants around? (I moved from DC and there are kabob restaurants on every corner, it seemed!) Oh - and sushi! Any decent sushi? We've found two places that are okay but not awesome (Mai Thai in Florence and Mae Ploy in Highland Heights).

Thanks again! I grew up in the midwest but somehow feel like a fish out of water here. I work from home and travel a lot for work so I haven't had much opportunity to meet people or explore. My bf is not exactly a social butterfly. I know we will be happier in the spring when we can get outside but I don't want to just mark time in the meantime!

Andy's Mediterranean is really tasty...its in Cincinnati near Eden Park. As for Sushi, FI and I like Miyako off of Buttermilk Pk...there's also Teak Thai in Cincinnati (Mt Adams). There are other good bars and resturants in Mt. Adams too...a couple wine bars that are more low-key and have a more mature crowd, but there are also a couple dance clubs too.

Pho Saigon in Florence is yummy, but if you venture across the river there is an excellent Vietnamese restaurant in Findlay Market that is now only open for lunch, but I think they are trying to expand their hours to dinner as well. They have bahn mi, bun, and pho. Its called Pho Lang Thang and you can find them on facebook for more info. There's also Cilantro, which is up near Univ. of Cincinnati. Its a tiny place, but the food is pretty tasty.

Riverside is great and they have a really nice lunch, if you wanted to try them wihout spending a lot of money.

Rio Grande is a great mexican restaurant in Newport. Definitely check them out.

Also, check out Dewey's Pizza. Its a local chain, but verrrry delicious. There's one in the Crestiview Hills Shopping Center and one in Newport (and several in Cincinnati).

Also, if you haven't been to Clifton (in Cincinnati), you should check out the Esquire movie theatre. They have mainly indie and foreign films and there are a couple good restaurants around there as well. Tuesday nights the admission is reduced too, so it makes for a great date night.

mmmm, thats all I can think of right now. Welcome to the area!

THANKS! I was just thinking this weekend it would be great if we had an indie movie theatre! We love Rio Grande. Try Azteca if you haven't yet - it's in Erlanger on the big road... Dixie Highway I think? It used to be a German butcher shop - it's kind of funny. But awesome food. Dirt cheap booze.

    Thank you thank you! :)

That run21 one was paint - no idea why it came up as another screen name. I could swear I was logged in as me!

Ha! TK gets buggy sometimes. We'll definitely have to try Azteca...we don't get over to Erlanger much, but we may have to make an exception. Its funny, but I know the German who owned that butcher shop. I was wondering what they did with that building.

It's hysterical to have a Mexican place in the German building. Margaritas are 2 for 1 on Fridays and are really cheap in any case - $3.75 I think. Wild.

<div>Viet girl here.  Yes, definitely recommend Pho Lang Thang.  There's also Song Long on Section Road, very yummy and authentic.  Cilantro, eh...my standards are probably too high, but it's perhaps a good quick lunch joint.</div>

In my opinion, La Mexicana on Monmouth in Newport can't be beat for Mexican food.  Jo An and Ando are the best sushi places in town for my money.  The Gaslight District in Clifton (near UC) is where to go for Indian (grab some Indian before seeing a indie film at the Esquire), Oakley is where to go for Thai (Lemongrass has my favorite food but Wild Ginger has nicer ambiance).

In terms of stuff to do, you might want to keep an eye peeled for final friday stuff downtown.  Shops and galleries open up and you can wander through.  I think they also do something similar in O'Bryonville.

Another indoor activity is cooking classes.  I've been to a few at the Party Source and they're really interesting and they feed you too.  Sometimes they'll have chefs from top restaurants in town show you how to cook stuff.  I prefer the lunchtime "quickies."

    Welcome!

The only museum in NKY is the Creation Museum. It is past the airport on 275 in petersburg. I have never been there but it is apparently pretty interesting regardless if you are religious or not.

Thanks all! :) I didn't realize Party Source had lunch classes. As I mentioned I work from home and don't know a soul here. I can go for days without seeing another human aside from my bf!

<div>There is also the Behringer-Crawford Museum, which is in Covington.  It makes for a beautiful wedding reception, btw, for anyone who's still shopping.</div>

Good suggestion on the Cyclones game! We'll have to check that out.

We aren't shopping reception sites just yet (NEY) but I'm hoping to elope anyway. My family... D-R-A-M-A. Skip please! :) If he talks me in to a wedding I'll be back for suggestions!
