GREECE - Mykonos vs. Santorini

FI and I are planning to do one week in Greece and one week in Rome.  We're debating whether to do Mykonos or Santorini for our Greek portion of the trip...the plan is to relax during the first week and enjoy soaking up the sun, laying on the beach, lounging about before we do more of active, sight-seeing type stuff in Italy. My question is - has anyone been to either location in Greece and have any feedback or suggestions? Or are the about the same!?!?!

I've never been to Mykonos but we spent 3 days in Santorini in August as part of a larger trip to Greece and Egypt, and it was amazing. Santorini is the most beautiful place I've ever been. We stayed in Oia, which is just gorgeous. It's set up into the hillside, and you stay in these little white stone cave houses. Ours had a little pool on the deck and a gorgeous view of the Aegean. There are lots of little restaurants and shops in Oia and it's small and walkable (albeit lots of stairs!). Fira is the main town and has a lot going on. There are also beach towns down on the water. There are even red and black sand beaches (we went to the red beach, it was really cool!). If I were you, I would split the week and spend half of it in Oia and half of it at one of the beach resorts. There are some amazing beach resorts, but you'd miss out on the Greek experience if you stayed there the entire time, I think. Plus, Oia is just amazing. Enjoy!

That sounds like a lovely honeymoon!  I was on both Mykonos and Santorini plus a few others last summer.  They are both lovely and beachy and picturesque.  Mykonos has much more of a wild feel than Santorini, in my opinion- it has all the huge clubs downtown that don't get going until after midnight and it has a series of escalatingly-more-crazy beaches (Paranga, Panormos, Paradise, Super Paradise, etc.) accessible by water taxi from most resorts.  We spent more time on the resort in Santorini.  HTH!

Interesting...I don't think we'd be hitting up any of the wild clubs, haha. We want to regroup and de-stress post-wedding for that part of the trip so maybe Santorini sounds better for that?? I really want to walk around and see the area, too, though. I love learnign about a new place's local charm and that sort of thing.

Thanks for posting this!  My FI and I have only a week and we were wondering if we should split our time between Santorini and Mykonos or just stay at one or the other.

Ive been to the Greek Isles a few times.  Santorini is the most beautiful, you cant miss the sunset in Oia, its wonderful.  You will have lots to do and see there, or just relax- red sand beach, black sand beach, shopping, dining on the caldera overlooking the water, its gorgeous.  Mykonos is beautiful too, but Santorini is the nicer.  Mykonos is wilder, there is a section called "Little Venice" where you have to go and eat, the streets are all curved and winding so pirates of long ago couldnt find their ships- you get lost, its neat.  Great shoppng, but very expensive.  Id tell you to go to Santorini, its more of a honeymoon spot and you wont be sorry.

We're spending a week in Santorini for our honeymoon; originally I wanted to split between Santorini and Mykonos but then we decided it would be more relaxing to stay in just one place and then possibly ferry over for day trips.  We chose Santorini because it looked that much more beautiful, that much more relaxing [we're not clubbing types], and just exactly the kind of Greek experience we were looking for for the honeymoon.  Greece isn't going anywhere, I have the rest of my life to see other parts of it!

Just got back from both those places on our honeymoon and hands down go to Santorini!  We went to Mykonos first and it's definitely more of a party island.  Santorini is absolutely beautiful.  The whole time we were there I kept saying we shoudl've just came here the whole time!  Anastasis Apartments were amazing and you can't beat the views.

If you don't mind me asking, about how much were your guys' Honeymoon trips to Santorini Greece?  I hav eseen picks nad it's one of my choices as well as Ireland.  Thanks ladies.

I Santorini.  You won't go wrong there.  I've never been to Mykonos though, so can't compare.  Have fun! :)We spent 2 weeks in Italy for our honeymoon, which was also lovely!  Sounds like you've planned a perfect trip.

Our whole trip, including flights, meals, and 10 nights in mykonos, santorini, and athens was around 8000.

JodyPlusTwin - do you remember the name of the cave house you stayed at in Oia?  I've been researching lots of them and prefer a place with a pool like you mention.  Thanks!
