Honeymoon ideas for June 2011?

Hi, everyone -- My fiance and I are feeling a bit overwhelmed in trying to figure out where to go for our June honeymoon (the wedding is 6/11/11). Every time we think we've come up with a place, well-meaning friends have something negative to say -- Maine and Nova Scotia? Black flies, they say. Bermuda? Pricey for what you get (this from a travel agent).

I love the idea of a tropical beach, but my skin doesn't love the sun or the heat. Would the Florida Keys be any better (cooler with weaker rays) than a Caribbean beach, I wonder?

We want something that's a beautiful setting and on the water -- lake or beach. We live in Pennsylvania and will only have a week off work. We're willing to fly or drive. I want something quiet and relaxing but that has places to go and things to do if we choose. Another suggestion we received was White Pine Camp in the Adirondacks, but the accommodations look a bit more rustic than I'm hoping for...and I don't really want to be cooking every night on our honeymoon (or any night of the honeymoon, for that matter!).

We took a one-week trip to Italy last May that was go, go, go all the time, so downtime during this trip is key.

Thanks for any suggestions! Even if we can narrow the bazillion options down to, say, a dozen, that would be a good start!

Re: Honeymoon ideas for June 2011?

  • Knowing your budget will help.  Have you considered a cruise or Hawaii?
  • First, don't let people talk you into or out of anything. It is your honeymoon and you guys have to do what you want. People tried to talk us out of Mexico, but we did not listen and had an awesome time and cannot wait to go back. Ultimately it depends on what you are into as a couple. Are you into the beach and relaxing with a few things? Then you may want to consider the Caribbean, Hawaii, or Mexico, are you into the outdoors and mountains, a cruise, sightseeing? That is up to you as a couple and don't let anyone decide for you.

  • We are a June couple as well.
Our hm took us to St. Lucia
Our 1yr anniversary was in Jamaica.
This past year we went to Mexico on March and Key West in June.
Unless you can tolerate lots of heat and humidity stay away from KW in June. That being said, we are going back this June LOL.
We are also going to Antigua this March.

I have two reviews one from St. Lucia and one from Jamaica on our website as well as pics from all of our trips thus far. I don't know if that will be any help or not.
FYI, we stayed at Sandals for St. Lucia and Jamaica, Mexico was the Royal Cancun and Key West was the Hyatt on Front St.

This is the link to our new website. This site is a work in progress right now so all features may not work but the reviews and pics should.

Incase that site doesn't work here's the link to our old site.

We are from PA as well and accidentally found out about this place last year and went there for an extended weekend. Soooo beautiful and laid back...

For our honeymoon we will be going to the Excellence couples-only resort in Pnta Cana, Dominican Republic. Let me know if you would like our travel agent's name for that or more info about Sleeping Bear Dunes :)

Virgo, we're date twins! (Yes, I'm oddly excited by that!) I'm also in Central PA. Where are you located in PA? I'm in the York area.  My skin also shares your skin's love/hate relationship with the sun! I burn immediately! But I'm still holding out for a white beach with lots of umbrella drinks :)

We're just starting our HM research, so I'm not much help.  I can tell you our friends just got back from Sandals St. Lucia and they loved it.  My bff went to Croatia for her HM in Sept 2009 (odd choice of location, but they had a great time and a beautiful beach!) and we had friends go to Antigua (they liked it, but said it got boring after a few days).

  • Virgo we are 6-10-11.  We too are having the same problem.  Where to go.  So your not alone.

    My first choice is Europe
    Second choice is European cruise.

    It's giving me a headache!

  • My DH and I went to Vail, CO for our HM.  I'm sensitive to the sun, too, and still wore sunscreen every day, but the temps there at the end of June were gorgeous- ~45, maybe 50F at night, and in the mid70s with low humidity during the day.  Since I see you're also from central PA, I know you'll appreciate the low humidity aspect of it all.

All that being said, if you're not into outdoors kind of stuff, it's probably not the place for you to go.  :)  We did cave spelunking, white river rafting, zip lining, hiking.. there were lots of shops as well, and plenty of places to eat out.

  • It's good to know I'm not alone in the confusion! Now my fiance has Bermuda on the brain. He loves history so thinks he'd like the island, and thinks it would be better for me since it's not technically Caribbean, and not so hot. It's expensive, though. I think I'll post separately to see what experiences people have had there.

However, I will also check out all the other information you all have shared. The Knot is so wonderful! How did people exist before the Internet? (Travel agents, I guess!)

TeresaB: Good luck choosing a European destination! A cruise might be the best idea so you get the flavor of various places and will also have a chance to relax while you're at sea...or on a river, or whatever. Otherwise, you could find yourselves exhausted from trying to fit everything in.

WriterGirl: I live in Carlisle, and my fiance is in Gettysburg. I'm a writer/editor, so maybe we really are twins! Good luck as you begin your search. (I'm avoiding all the other wedding details. Travel research is more fun!)
