Puerto Rico vs Costa Rica

Which do you prefer and what hotels/resorts do you suggest?  Also, is it worth finding an all inclusive plan here?  Are things meeals very expensive with AI plan?

THANKS!!!!

Re: Puerto Rico vs Costa Rica

  • Puerto Rico is awesome and there's alot to do. However, they don't have many AI's and for a good reason. PR isn't really a place you go to stay at your hotel all week and lounge on the beach. There are so many natural attractions, nice restaurants, and historical landmarks in PR that you will be sightseeing the whole time. We rented a car because we wanted to drive all around the island. We were there 8 days and still didn't see everything we wanted to.

I've never been to Costa Rica but I've always gotten the impression it was for more adventurous travelers who enjoy recreational activities like hiking, surfing, caving, snorkeling, kayaking and stuff like that. I've also heard that it's extremely safe. I don't consider PR to be very tourist friendly and at times I did feel unsafe. We had a couple things happen that made me a little nervous so definitely do some research about the area and make sure you know the right places to go.
  • i've been to both and enjoyed the both for differnt reasons. they both have a ton of culture, tons to do etc.. food and people are great in both. what do you want out of the trip?
i did AI in CR and had a great time-we relaxed on the beach jsut as much as we got out a did things.
i did not do AI in PR (not sure if there are any) but stayed in isla verde. didn't ahve any issues about feeling safe.
at the end of the day I can't say which is better for you. do your research-there's TONS online and in books.

  • I haven't been to CR, but I had a blast in PR.  We are the more adventurous type and we did everything from kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, ziplining, horseback riding, etc.  There aren't any AIs and we didn't have a problem finding things.  I also never felt unsafe.  Even though the area surrounding our hotel wasn't the best, nothing ever seemed threatening to me.  There's a pretty good police presence (they drive with their lights on all the time) so that helped too.

You just need to do a lot of research and figure out what your travel priorities are and which destination works best for them.  Tripadvisor is always helpful for us (that's how we decided on PR last year)

I went to Costa Rica a few years ago (for a volunteer trip to work with sea turtles, not to relax). It was incredible--the people were wonderful, everywhere we went was beautiful, and there was a lot to do during down time. If you are looking for a more active honeymoon, Costa Rica would be a good fit. This is definitely the kind of place that makes you want to get up and explore.

Check out Selva Bananito (an eco hotel) if you want a unique place to stay.
