Honeymoon in the U.S. help please!

Hey there! The FI and I are getting married June 15 of this year. We have a pretty tight budget for a honeymoon, not horrible, but can't really afford to go outside of the United States. I am having horrible luck picking a destination to go. We live in Tennessee so somewhere we could drive to would be ideal, unless the cost isnt too bad with plane tickets! We'd like a leasurely honeymoon, but not so much where we never have anything to do. Any help would be very much appreciated!!!!!

Re: Honeymoon in the U.S. help please!

  • What about the outer banks of North Carolina, or the Chincoteague islands in Virginia?
  • You would have to fly, but FI and I went to San Antonio for a long weekend last year and we absolutely loved it!
  • Depending on where you live in TN, the outer banks and GA coast can be further than just driving to florida (my family lives near Chattanooga and it's more than an 8 hour drive to Savannah because you can't avoid Atlanta).  I would go to the Gulf.  PP's suggestions are good - I always recommend Seaside and Santa Rosa Beach also.  Super cute, and you can rent private condos on the beach - no crowds, either, because many of the beaches there are private.

[QUOTE]If you like museums and historical sites, then try Washington, DC.  You can spend days in the Smithsonian and still not see it all.

That's a great idea! DC is tons of fun. :-) there are a million things to do.

Not sure how leisurely it would be though.

I was also going to say Washington DC, if you've never been. All the museums are free, and the weather is pretty good all year except Dec-Feb.

If you go, see if you can get a cheap flight. All the hotels charge you by the night to put your car in their garage, and it's from $30-$50 a night. If you can get a cheap fare into any of the airports, you can catch the Metro subway either directly, or via bus to the Metro. The subway is awesome and gets you anywhere you want to go

Best hotel with best rate we ever stayed in was the State Plaza. It's an old apartment converted into a hotel, every room has a full kitchen, and there is a CVS around the corner that sells microwaveable food and other items so you can save money on food.

I'd also recommend Charleston SC. Lovely historic area downtown, beaches.

If you decide on a city, go to www.travelzoo.com. We planned our entire 2 week honeymoon in CA by using hotels and restaurants I found there. They are reviewed by real customers, and all were pretty accurate.

    Good luck.
  • Depending on your budget an all-inclusive in Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, or the Dominican could actually be much more budget friendly. Your flight, hotel stay, and all food, drinks, and most activities would be included for one flat price. We went to Jamaica last year for our anniversary and paid $1300 for both of us (with everything included) and this year we're going to the DR for DH's birthday and spent about $1600 for both of us with everything included. While I love traveling domestically, it all adds up quick... flights, rental car, gas, hotel stay parking at the hotel, all your food, drinks, tours, etc..
  • We went to Destin, Florida and stayed at the Henderson Park Inn.  We loved it.  So relaxing and beautiful.  It's next to a state park so it's far away from the "spring break" crowd - it's like a private beach.  And the price of your room includes breakfast and a boxed lunch each day, so you are really just budgeting for dinner.  (Lots of affordable awesome seafood in the area as well). We had a great room with a king bed and huge jacuzzi tub and a balcony looking out to the ocean, and I think the non-ocean-view rooms are more affordable (we got a great rate because it was winter though).  I'm not sure what their summer rates would be like but you should look into it! We drove there and so we had our car for day trips to Seaside and the other beaches in the area, but we ended up loving hanging out at the hotel so much we mostly just stuck around there.
  • I live in Alabama, so I would say the Gulf if you have never been. Being from TN though, I am assuming you have been to some of the beaches there. Have you considered New Orleans and that surrounding area. It is always a good time!

So sorry it has taken so long to get back to all of you! Thank you so much everyone for all your posts and insightful information to all of these places! I looked into every single one trying to find the best fit for both of us. I'm looking into the Charleston,SC one now, it looks lovely there! Beaches for the FI and history stuff for me! Sounds perfect! :)
