How to Discourage Smoking Under the Tent

Hi everyone! I am getting married in a church, but then the reception will be in my backyard under a tent. If the weather is nice, God willing, we're going to set up a cocktail area away from the tent around my parents' inground pool. I do NOT want my guests thinking "oh, we're outside, i can smoke right here," especially since at least five younger children are coming!

Should I put up signs discouraging smoking under the tent, and suggesting they go to the cocktail area? How would I word these? How is everyone else handling this? I realize it would be proper for this to happen, but I'm concerned with a couple of smoking relatives who don't always have the best manners.

Re: How to Discourage Smoking Under the Tent

  • I never even thought of this...  Do we have the same family? I have about 5 small children and a couple unruly relatives that smoke and would definately assume since it's outside they can smoke wherever.

I hope someone has a good idea.

Well this may not work for everyone and I may get some grief, but I made small folded note card type signs to put out.  My wedding is in a Pavilion, which is a non-smoking building, my contract states this as well as the park rules. Its considered a public building and in that county is is illegal to smoke in public buildings.  They can however smoke outside the pavilion itself, that is allowed per the contract & rules. I only have 10 of these, going to place them in a few places, not all over.

BTW, these are 10 free folded note cards I designed on Vista Print to match my other paper items from there.

The patio outside has 10 picnic tables that will be available for their smoking use.

And, I think all 3 of us may be marrying into the same family!  They seem to think its ok to light up any where at times  Most of my family does not smoke, but FI's family, that's a whole different world.

  • I think putting a few no smoking signs in the tent, or the little cards that fairy just posted, would do the trick.

Wow, I never thought of this either.  I'm hoping people understand that if they smoke, not everyone will be okay with this and step off to the side or go around front (and properly dispose of their butts).  I think I only have a few smokers, but isn't it smoker etiquette that if they're are no ashtrays that they know not to smoke?
  • I would make a few cute signs and post them around. Also if you have a DJ he could make a friendly reminder or you could have someone else make the announcement, or your self. What about setting up a small smoking area away from the tent? put a little sign and fill a bucket or coffe can with sand for thier ciggerette butts. that way they arnt thrown all over your yard!
