I personally don't travel with my e-ring.  When we get married, I will just wear the band.  I leave my e-ring in the safe deposit box at the bank (doesn't get much safer than that) and it's insured.  We often travel to Europe and South America.  Since e-rings aren't as common over there, I would have felt like a target with such a flashy piece of jewelry.  I think the Caribbean/Mexico/anywhere in the US you're generally OK because I'm assuming you're going to a touristy place (not just renting a car and driving around Mexico).  But like others have said, I only bring costume jewelry with me when traveling.
ETA - it's not that I'm worried someone's going to steal it off my finger.  It's more that I'm worried that I'm a target for a robbery or a mugging.  They see nice jewelry & think I have lots of cash.
  • Make sure your rings are insured, but also make sure they fit properly! Since getting engaged in April of last year, I have lost some weight (YAY ME) and I feel like my engagment ring is a little too loose. I'm planning to get it resized (along with my matching wedding band) before the wedding to make sure everything fits like it should. I take my ring off to shower (so nothing gets caught in my hair) and to wash dishes (this I have no explanation for) but I've worn it to the beach, in the pool, and at the gym. Unless someone cuts my whole damn finger off, they aren't getting this baby off me!

I wore mine!  If I didn't want to wear it on an excursion or something I just put it in the safe in our room... we didn't have any problems!

  • I just don't see why it's a strange thing.  I don't wear my e-ring all the time anyway, and yes sand CAN scratch gold.  Been there, done that, and then it's a thing you have to take care of.

I think it's silly to be worried about theft, but not about taking care of it.  I think this is an each to his own thing.

There is one thing about taking care of it, but another about being crazy about it.  It isn't like I just drop mine on the ground then drive over it with my car for the hell of it, but I am also not going to be completely paranoid about it either.  Will your ring get scratched even if you are careful?  Yes.  Could you possibly knock out the diamond by accidentedly hitting the ring up against something?  Yes.  You can be as careful as you want but stuff can still happen.

People should be able to wear their rings without constantly worrying that something is going to scratch it, make it dirty, etc.  Crap happens all the time and that is why insurance is important.  With insurance you can relax by knowing that, God forbid anything happens,  it can easily be fixed and/or replaced.

you can get robbed at home too just as easily.

[QUOTE]Of course we wore our rings.  I live in the center of a major East Coast city.  I wear my rings every day.  Rings can be stolen no matter where you are.

This was my opinion also.  I left the e-ring in the box at the bank though because the idea of wearing it in Europe made DH a nervous wreck.

I REALLY don't understand why people won't wear them to Europe. I do realize that Europeans aren't as into engagement rings as we are, but anytime I have been to Europe (I've been many countries there), I have always felt surrounded by people who were more well off than me! In fact, I felt safer walking around in London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Munich, etc than I do walking around NYC, LA, or Phoenix! I'm planning on going to Budapest, Bratislavia, Vienna, and Salzburg this year and you bet I'm earing my rings! If I ever felt threatened by the possiblity of a mugging (which I can't say I have), I'd either tuck my hand into my pocket or hold it close to my body, as you would with a purse, which is more of a target IMHO.

  • I'll never understand this.   My ring stays on my finger every day.... when I garden, paint, swim, travel, change poopy diapers... it doesn't matter.  It's on my finger where I know where it is and it won't get lost. Don't want people to steal it? Don't take it off!  And don't flash it around.  Look around you.   Women wear jewellery.  Lots of jewellery!  Unless you've got a ginormous rock (think some celebrities), why would anyone notice yours over any other ring?
