Overwhelmed by Outdoor Lighting

Hey Ladies!

We are renting a large cabin on a lake for our outdoor ceremony/reception.  I am very excited to have an outdoor ceremony/reception but since it is a non-traditional venue unless we hire privately we are on our own for setup/tear down.
Although I am excited I am very overwhelmed by the lighting aspect! There are some trees to which we could hang things from but otherwise it is a fairly open space and the wedding will be from 5 to 11.  I am so overwhelmed my fiance offered a coordinator just to help figure out the lighting but since we are renting the cabin its not like we can check it out whenever we want plus a coordinator seems super expensive.

Does anyone have any ideas on lighting a large area at night?  I want to make sure that it is soft and romatic but also that my guests can see lol!  I am also checking into any event lighting companies in the area (Mankato/St. Peter, MN) but am not sure if any exist.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Re: Overwhelmed by Outdoor Lighting

  • We bought string lights to scatter around. You could combine that with candles (or battery operated ones) for night ambiance. If you are interested, I have 17 boxes of string lights that I'm selling.
  • I am doing 3 battery operated candles on each table. Our tent has globe lighting and then I am doing an aisle of shepard hooks with mason jars with battery operated LED lights in them. I am actually worried about my tent being TOO bright. Also I am doing Glow Sticks once sunset happens.

  • We did candle centerpieces on satin linens, 3 large hurricanes on each table, with string lights around some trees and candle lanterns scattered around the area.
  • I will tell you that lighting, small and large can add a great effect!  What if for the outside you did mason jars with candles, hang lights from trees.. add candles of different sizes to the tables, you can even have white bags with lights in them along where you are going to walk down.  If you get high top tables, cover them in linen and add candles on them as well!  There are also balloons that have glow in the dark lights in them you can have around the area?

    I hope this helps!  Congrats!!!
  • Have you priced out coordinators in your area? Most have full service, month before and day of. It's worth checking out and they make things so much less stressful. I jumped at the chance to have mine.

I love the mason jar ideas and I'm having oil lamps as my centerpieces (still a work in progress) with some votive candles. Plus, the house manager of my venue has christmas lights all over the place as it is, so I got lucky with that. They're really bright and really easy to set up/take down. Do you have available electrical outlets for them? If not, maybe tiki torches?

    Good luck!

  • Did you sell the lights already? If not what are you asking?
