Excellence Riviera Maya vs. Secrets Maroma Beach

So having a tough time deciding between the two for our honeymoon at the end of Aug.  Need honest opinions about which might be the better choice.  Heard that Secrets might have the better beach.

I have not been to Excellence but I can tell you that Maroma Beach is ranked as one of the best in the world. I thought the property was nice, the spa was gorgeous and the atmosphere was good.

I'm glad you posted this.. I had the same question!! I have heard Maroma Beach can't be beat but I liked the look of the excellence resort and I believe they have more food options? My cousin went there for hers and loved it. If we had enough $$ to spring for the rooftop suites I will definitely do that. Curious to hear others opinions since they are close in price and so highly ranked on tripadvisor!

Bumping this post to see if anyone else has feedback -- we've looked at pretty much every option imaginable for our honeymoon this October, and our budget has gone up down and back again, but I think we're finally settling on Secrets Maroma Beach -- in our original budget, and I haven't seen anything negative about it (aside from mosquitos, which I will be prepared haha).  It seems great but now I'm hearing Excellence Playa Mujeres may also be worth a look?  Too many options!

We have not been to Excellence Riviera Cancun, but have been to both Secrets Maroma Beach and Excellence Playa Mujeres. Enjoyed both of them, but liked Secrets more. However, prices for Secrets have gone up a lot since we went, and Excellence, in my opinion, is a better value. There are more food options at Excellence and we thought the entertainment there was better, also had nicer rooms. The beach at Secrets was far better than at Excellence (when we were at Excellence there was a lot of seaweed on the beach), but Secrets was harder to find a spot at the beach/pool. The gym was much nicer at Excellence too, but not sure that you'll be worried about that on your honeymoon. There were lots of honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries at both resorts, and I think either would be a great choice for a honeymoon. Based on my experience, if you are a beach person and its within your budget, then Secrets Maroma is the better option. However, if you prefer to hang out at the pool, you may like Excellence more.
