I'll never shop at Macy's again

Being registered at Macys did not have its perks for me. Ever since the wedding, their customer service has been horrendous. I've had to return a few things and it was a huge thorn in my side each time. I didn't even go to the same Macy's - it was horrible at both that I went to. Why it takes more than 1/2 an hour to make a return and purchase new items to complete the registry is beyond me. I put a set of Henckels knives on hold so I could go back the next day with my wedding money to purchase them. Well I went back and they sold them to someone else, and it was their last set. My china is backordered until February 2010. I received multiples of items I registered for, and they questioned why I was returning them. The straw that broke the camel's back was yesterday. I had to return a set of flatware because it was the brushed finish instead of what I had registered for. The odd part is that the guest who made the purchase bought us 2 sets of silverware, but one was the right one and the other was wrong. The cashier I had no problems with. It's the manager that had the gall to blame my guest for not checking to see that the items were correct. Excuse me? Isn't it the employee's job to locate the correct item in the store room when a guest hands you a registry and asks for a specific item? Of course they didn't have the flatware in stock anywhere nearby. I told her to ship it to my house. She tried to charge me for the shipping even though it was their fault. Basically she said I was out of luck. Her attitude was unbelievable, and I thought she could have given me a break especially since I was just in and she couldn't figure out the flippin' computer to return something the other day. She finally said that she would do me a favor and ship it for free, even though "well, it wasn't our fault. Maybe they wanted to give you both types of flatware." Who would do that, you moron??? I came home and had a drink. I'm never shopping at Macy's again. The registry at BB&B was way more manageable.

Wow, sorry to hear you had such a bad experiance.  I would put in a complaint.  I did not registar at Macys but I recieved a few gifts from there and luckily had no problem returning them.  I do have to agree w/ you on BB&B, they were great.  I went to exchange a few items and they gave me cash, I did not even ask for cash, I was expecting a merchandise credit, so that was a nice surprise.

Yeah, the cash was great from BB&B. I returned things and repurchased them using gift cards we received from guests.

So sorry you had to deal with that. We were going to register at Macy's but I told DH that I always have issues with their customer service when I have to return something. Good luck with getting your knives and china.

Oh no, say it isn't so!  We are registered there and just got our first gift today.  Hopefully we won't have too many problems, but Mrs. V, when did you get the gifts from just registering at Macy's?  You know like if you register for $1,000 of Mikasa, you get a spoon or whatever.  I thought that was supposed to come long ago, but nothing.

I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope everything turns out okay in the end.  You'd think their customer service would be better in tough economic times like these when they must be hurting for business.  Lame.  I agree with the pp about complaining to their corporate office.  Not sure if it will help, but I did this with Neiman's  because of bad service I received in their bridal salon and I almost immediately got an e-mail back from a manager with an apology and an offer for 10% off a bridal gown.  Not that I would go back, but I felt a little vindicated.  =)

I don't get how retailers can afford to be a$$holes in this ecomony. Retail reports are way down with consumer spending at major lows. It's so sad that manager didn't realize that she just lost a customer. Sorry to hear that you had a crappy experience with them. I would have found out her supervisor's name and made a stink about how she treated you.

I'm totally writing a letter. I'm not emailing, but sending it regular mail. Vans, I don't know that I would do Target if I were you. I heard that you used to need a gift receipt to make any returns on registry items. I don't know if it's still that way, but ???

So sorry to hear you had to go through that!! We actually registered at Macy's and BB&B. I personally havent heard anything bad about Macy's until today. I have heard awful things about Target's registry, and that is why we stayed away from them. Hopefully we wont have to many problems.

Target is horrible!!!!! I use to work there...back then they would let you return gifts without receipts but they required ur ID and u were only allowed 3 returns a year. Unless, you had a registry then they honor the return for the lowest selling price. ex: if your guest bought that blender for $40 and Target put that same blender on clearance cux a new models is in lets say $10 you only got $10 for the blender. Outrageous. I hven't worked at Target for 6yrs but FI bought something and it was over $25 and they would NOT take it back without a receipt, they dont do the ID thing anymore. Basically, you need a receipt to return anything at Target so GL to whoever registers at Target.

I've had very similar experiences at Macy's stores with my registry and I've tried 4 different stores (Beverly Center, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana and Pasadena). My China is also backordered till February 2010.  Making returns has been a slow and tedious process.  I've really started to question the intelligence of these people.  They act like making a return is the most awful thing for them and a personal attack on them.  They don't have a lot of items in store so we're had to order them through the store and then pay for shipping (at least it's flat rate). The worst thing was a couple of weeks before the wedding when I went to three different stores trying to buy my cake server set for the wedding. I bought it in the Beverly Center Store and when I got home I saw that it was completely tarnished (and the last one).  I returned it to Sherman Oaks and the one they had left had a price sticker on it and was gross.  Then I also tried Pasadena before I gave up and just used my MIL's set.

Well this makes me want to stay clear of Macy's entirely. I'm so sorry that you, and many others from what I read, is having such a terrible time with them. It makes no sense to be difficult in customer service. It's just crazy to me!!
