Open House Style Reception

We would like to have an open house style reception so people can come and go, eat or don't eat, not feel obligated to spend their whole evening there.  Does anyone have expereince with this?  Does anyone know of a place in the los angeles area that will accomodate an open house reception?

    If you want that style of a reception, then you may be best served to host it at a restaurant and just purchase hors d'eouvres and drinks.  You can have the reception from say 5-8pm and plan to do brief remarks to thank people for coming at 6pm.  After that, it is back to music and food and mingling.  It could work out well.
