Where did your ring come from?

I curious where everyone is getting their rings from? Mine is from Kays, but there are some gorgeous ones! My little brother is considering on popping the question to his girlfriend (i love her!) I told him to look at kays, he said he wanted something different. Soooo...help?
He stole my heart, so I'm stealing his last name.

FI's aunt and uncle own a local jewelry store.  His cousin opened the store on a Saturday afternoon for us to look at our leisure.  I ended up choosing my ring (6-prong round solitaire) and then we all went out for lunch.  It was such a wonderful experience and extra special to be with family.
  • We went to a local jeweler.  I pretty much knew what I wanted, and told FI what type of setting it was, we went and looked at a few rings together, and he went back and had them make exactly what I liked!
  • Mine actually came from an Etsy seller that specializes in vintage engagement rings.

  • Mine is from Charm Diamond Centre. It's exactlly what I wanted and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
  • Mine's from Helzberg. I'll probly get DF's from an etsy shop, and my brother's a jeweler and made his FI's ring, and our cousin's FI's ring and my sister's friend's ring.

  • mine is from Jared's I had no idea FI was planning to propose he picked it out with the help of his mom and he did an amazing job!
  • Mine's from Robbins Brothers (a large chain mostly on the West coast).  All rings are semi-mounts and then you choose the individual diamond.  I liked this idea that way you get to know your diamond (or your FI does) and you can see every little millimeter of it before having it set.

  • NEY, but the ring we have was my grandmother's wedding ring.

  • We had my ring custom made by a local jeweler.  We picked a diamond and I showed them the different elements I wanted for the engagement ring and wedding band, and they pulled it together.  If he goes the custom route I highly recommend talking to the actual craftsman (not just the sales associate) and making some sketches, my set wasn't initially just what we envisioned but we took it back after fiance proposed and they were able to fix it to our satisfaction once we spoke directly with the gentleman doing the design work.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

  • We got my E-ring and his wedding band from Kay. My wedding band is custom made from a local jeweler. If he wants something "different", I'd suggest heading to a local jeweler rather than a big chain store. They typically can offer a unique variety, suggest a lot of options to customize the ring, and can give better deals b/c they have more freedom with pricing. As much as I love Kay and their service, if I could go back in time, I'd have gone to a local jeweler for us to do the E-ring selection.

And like one PP said, support local businesses!
  • My e-ring and wedding ring are both from Blue Nile. We're not huge on chain jewelry stores and Blue Nile has conflict free diamonds.

Blue Nile for the reasons above..  also, they have a 30 day return period, so FI was able to surprise me without too much pressure of getting the perfect ring..  which he did anyways :)

My brother also used  Blue Nile, and both he and my FI were really impressed with the experience. My SIL and I are both super thrilled with our rings, too :)

My wedding band also came from BN because it fits my e-ring perfectly.

The only down side, is that while cleaning/inspections are free, you have to ship the rings to them, and they say the entire process could take 2-3 weeks.  I was able to find a local jeweler who will do it for me for free, though.  So I just go there.

  • My ring came from Nick's grandfather. It is a family heirloom (a very shiny one) and his grandfather brought it to him one day and said, "not sure if you're planning on proposing anytime soon but your grandmother and I would like you to propose with this." and gave him the ring for me. It means a lot because his grandfather raised him and his opinion means the world to Nick.  That was his way of telling Nick that they loved me too.  Does hurt that it's a 1 ct Marquise solitaire either.Laughing
  • My FI's uncle is a jeweler, so of course he was the first one FI went to when he decided it was time to propose. His uncle basically said "come up with any design you like, give me your budget, and I'll make your design and get you the best diamond I can within your budget!" So FI designed my gorgeous, antique-inspired setting and his uncle created it and found a great diamond for it. We basically did the same thing for my wedding band, except I got to help this time :) FI's mom is giving him his grandfather's wedding band. All-in-all, I know we really lucked out, inheriting one ring, and having a jewler in the family to help out with the other two! I realize not everyone has a jeweler in the family, so for your brother, OP, I would definitely recommend going to a local jewler, where he can probably work a little closer to create a more unique ring - I love the fact that my ring is so different from anything else I've seen, and I love when people compliment it and I get to tell them that my FI designed it himself!
  • My FI went to a local jewler in a town by him. He designed it all with a little from the jewler. They had 2 different rings figured out and FI chose one but told me that if i wanted the other one we could do that. and i said heck no!

FI decided prior to looking at rings that we wanted to our money to go to a local business, so we had it narrowed down to 3 stores that we went to look at.  We ended up going with a family owned jeweler called, "Josephs" because we got a discount through them after participating in a diamond dash contest they sponsored.

  • From a local-ish jeweler. We had terrible experience with Kay's.
  • The first ring FI bought was from Kay's. They lost it. >_< After much hassle, the diamond is from Kay and the setting (and my wedding band) are from a local jeweler. After our experience, I would never recommend Kay to anyone.

My e-ring is from Zales, my wedding band is from Kay. Both rings have lifetime warranties on them for lost stones/resizing/re-plating/etc, and I have had very good experiences with both stores.

  • Mine came from a local jeweller. While I love it, we haven't been impressed with the service we've received from the jeweller since purchasing the ring, so we'll probably look elsewhere for our bands (different local jewellers).

    Local jeweler for several reasons:

    1) Service
    2) Quality of stones and overall design
    3) Support local business
    4) Chains charge you WAYYYY more for lesser quality things than local places. ex: my ring (solitaire) is 0.85 carats with a platinum head, VS2, G color, excellent cut, round diamond with two accent diamonds under the main stone that I had the jeweler add because I loved the way it looked, for $3200.  At Kays, a (smaller stone) 0.75 solitaire with no accent diamonds, in their Leo collection (the best quality they have) is HI in color, SI1-SI2, leo cut ring for $4099.99.
    5) We didn't have to wait for some super sale that isn't really a sale.
    6) The people know us by NAME! and ask about XYZ in our lives, which is a nice touch.
    7) On site jewelers, meaning if something DOES go wrong (or it just needs redipped), I am without my ring for 10 mins instead of 2 weeks.
    8) They're still one of the largest jewelry stores in the midwest, so the selection is large and there are plenty of diamonds to choose from.

    No brainer for us!

*edited because I remembered some more reasons*
