ring cleaning question

How often do you clean your ring? What do you use to clean it? Is it possible to clean it too often?

I have had my ring less than 2 weeks and I've cleaned it 3-4 times so far. I have that jewelry cleaner in the red container and just take the brush out and give my ring a once over and then rinse and dry it all without taking it off my finger. I figure every once in a while I'll soak it too. I usually only take my ring off when doing dishes, showering, applying lotion, or doing something messy.

You can clean it as often as you want, but if it's white gold (instead of platnium or palladium), I would check with a jeweler. Often, the gold can "scratch" off, so you may want to check with them. But, you're doing the right thing in taking it off when you wash your hands, etc. Just don't forget where you put it! :-) 

Better than ring cleaner - a little bowl of water, a sprtz of Windex, and a toothbrush. A diamond specialist gave me that trick once and I never buy cleaner anymore.  But you should take your ring off when you're cleaning it - you can clean under the diamond much better and it'll sparkle even more!

Gold gets scratched, yes, but it doesn't matter the color.  White gold turns slowly over time because it is actually yellow gold with other metals added.

The best thing besides taking it to a jeweler to have it cleaned, is dawn soap and hot water.  It's really gentle and will make your ring really sparkle.  :)

ok, it is white gold. and FI did tell me that I can expect to need to have it "redipped" every now and then over the course of time. As for the scratching, if I get a baby toothbrush, should that take care of that?

Also I've heard the windex and dawn soap things mentioned before. 1) Just regular windex? Are there chemicals in windex? It makes me nervous but I've heard more and more people suggest it. 2) with dawn soap should I worry about soap residue?

I'm probably totally over thinking this, it's just that I never thought I would have a ring this beautiful and I really want to take the best care of it possible.

I only get my platinum ring cleaned by a jewler and it costs about $40 but makes so much difference. Just got it done last week and love it!!

My grandmother who used to own a jewelry shop told me that dishwashing soap, hot water and a toothbrush works as well as anything. I've been cleaning my ring (yellow gold, diamond) that way and it doesn't seem to leave any more residue on the ring than it does on the dishes. :P

Try the Dawn soap and see for yourself, it's definitely not going to hurt it. 

Don't spend ANY money to get a ring cleaned, most jewelry stores (like chain stores) will clean jewelry for free.  Polishing/Re-dipping may cost money.

i have heard windex windex windex - also good if the ring gets stuck on your finger from the jewler, parents, and the guy who appraised my ring

I bought my FI a steam cleaner from Bed, Bath and Beyond, it's branded under the Sharper Image name and typically the store will only have one in stock and the sales staff will have no idea it's there, but it usually will be hiding somewhere near the other personal bathroom effects.  It's $70 to $80, and you need a jug of distilled water from the grocery store, fill it up, turn it on, a minute or two later it's ready to go.  You hold the ring with a pair of rubber-coated tweezers and push a button on the top and it will spray a jet of steam to clean anything off the ring, including the underside in the hard to get places.  Toothbrush and warm water works well too but is more time consuming.  Downside to steam cleaners is it can't be used with some types of stones, but it can be used with more stones than an ultrasonic cleaner and also doesn't run the risk of loosening stones in their settings like an ultrasonic cleaner does.

I was told to use gentle dish washing liquid and a baby toothbrush.  Easy, inexpensive and eco-friendly.

I use a toothbrush and teensy bit of toothpaste.  It works better than any other product I've ever tried!  Be sure to get the underside of the diamond, between prongs, etc. to make sure the maximum amount of light can get through.
