  • Cruise around the boards and you'll get most (if not all) of your questions answered.

  • Budget.  Sit down with your FI and discuss how much you guys have for the wedding. If you need to save then make sure you have a realistic goal and set your date accordingly.

Venues.  Book appointments with venues so you can see them and get their packages.

Once you have your venue picked out and you know what kind of wedding you want (formal, semiformal, casual) then you can pick out your dress.  It's important to know your venue and style of wedding you want or you may end up with a dress that doesn't look right (casual, destination gown for a formal wedding doesn't really mix).

There's a knot check list to kind of give you guidelines (and remember that you probably won't need/do everything on that list).  Good luck and look around on the boards.  They give good, sometimes very blunt, advice that can be helpful.

  • Ditto PPs and keep one thing in mind: A wedding requires only two people who want to marry, a license and an officiant.  Everything else is extra so don't get sucked into the wedding industry's "This is your special day" brainwashing.  Decide what is most important to you and make it work within your budget.

  • Decide what matters most to you and start there!

We started with a budget, then did our guest list, now we're searching venues! It's easy to get sucked in and overwhelmed, but most websites will give you a checklist - it helps. My first suggestion is to make a binder! Just put pictures and jot down ideas you love in there - it helps reminds you whats important to YOU
"So what? So it's not going to be easy. It's gonna be hard.
Really hard. But I wanna do that because I want you
    - all of you, you and me, every day. Forever."

  • I would start by deciding on the budget and date. Then guest list and vendors. Use the Knot. It's really helpful
  • I started with the checklist on this site. It really prioritized things well and made me feel more "in control" of the planning. Good luck and congrats!

  • If you feel overwhelmed there's no need to make it any bigger or do any more than what you really want.  As tldh mentioned it only requires a bride and groom, a license, and an officiant for a wedding to take place.

Break it down to one thing at a time and start with something like the budget that will set the parameters for your wedding.  And it's your fiance's wedding too so if things matter to him it is a good idea for him to help with some of the legwork so it doesn't all fall on your shoulders!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
