Over 60

Hello,

I've just become engaged to my first love!  We reconnected after 30 years!  We intend to marry in the spring (if we can find a place).  2 questions:  where can I find a dress suitable for my age, and does anyone in the Boston area know of someplace fairly inexpensive for a reception?  It's my second marriage and his third.

thanks. Paula

    Congratulations and welcome!!

How wonderful for you two to reconnect and want to share the rest of your lives together.

If you are not looking to do the whole bridal salon experience, some places that people shopped were Nordstrom's and Saks.  They have some lovely dresses.  I know we had some brides who wore what they felt most beautiful in (the way it should be) and were not necessarily in white.

We like to know about your fur-babies--if you have any?  Pictures are always welcome.

We also have a thing for shoes and cake.  Not necessarily in that order.

    Congrats again!!

Right1 (Donna) still lives in the area, and I grew up in Boston.  She might have suggestions for you.

After going to numerous boutiques, I ended up in a dress from David's Bridal Special Occasion section.  Right now, a lot of stores have some pretty snazzy long dresses out, but you should wear whatever you feel beautiful in.

Are you in the city, or in one of the burbs?  I am in central MA, and work along the 495 corridor, south of the Pike, so I have some knowlege around there as well.

Almost any nice restaurant has some private dining rooms that you can book.  Typically you can pick items from the menu, narrow down the choice to 3-4, and set up a bar tab and pay the bill at the end of the night.

If you are looking even more inexpensive than a restaurant would be, there's always VFWs, Legions and you can hire a caterer.  The Boston local board would be a great resource.  If you feel out of place, you can always just lurk & read through threads, I bet  you'll find lots of ideas.  ~Donna

The Boston board seems ga-ga over this place.  http://www.grovelandfairways.com/

Disclaimer - I've never heard of them, and don't even know where Groveland, MA is.

I used to live in Westborough...

I like the idea of a nice restaurant.

The dress: anything you want! I ended up wearing an off the rack dress from Cache...Is Filine's still there?

    Congratulations!

We actually had our reception after the ceremony in the private dining room of the Legal Sea Foods in Burlington Mall.  (The ceremony itself was in a synagogue.)  They didn't have either a rental fee for the venue or a minimum food and beverage amount.  Instead, they just added 2% to the cost of the food and beverage for the privilege of using the private dining room.

As far as dresses go, I wore a strapless ivory wedding dress--and my wedding was on my 56th birthday.  However, there really are no rules.  If you want to wear an evening dress, a nice suit, a bridesmaid's dress, or whatever else strikes your fancy, the wedding police aren't going to arrest you.

Congratulations on finding your lost love!  I'm sure you'll find the dress of your dreams.  I suggest you check the Boston board for suggestions re: small, non-chain places.

I bought my dress off the rack at Nordstrom.  Loved it!  Oh, and I skipped the "bridal" look for the first wedding as well ... I went for a custom-made dress then.

I envisioned how I wanted our evening to go and bought a dress that would be perfect.  In advance, I knew it would be long and in the blue/purple family.  I let the sales person at Nordstrom do the rest.  She was on the look out for the dress and, one day, when I was there to find a dress for another occassion, I spotted "the" dress for the wedding.

Go with your gut and choose something that matches the mood you want to set.  Make sure it is comfortable.  Enjoy!

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Since I posted my question I have the venue, the Chateau Restaurant in Norton, MA.  The ceremony will take place there as well.  We are in the midst of interviewing DJ's.  Still haven't looked for a dress, but will look in the places suggested.

    thanks.
