Anybody been to a wedding at Promontory Point? Dealt with the Chicago Park District?

My fiance and I just got engaged a few weeks ago, and this is my first post on The Knot. I promise I'll circle back with all the details of the proposal in the near future! Meantime, we're looking to set a date pretty quickly because we've been dating long enough that we don't want a very long engagement and boy! do venues get snapped up quick in the city!

We plan to have the ceremony at our church in Bucktown. We're pretty ready to put our money down on Promontory Point in Hyde Park for the reception. It was one of the first venues my fiance suggested. It's on the lake, which has played a big role in our relationship. And it has that laid-back, backyard feel I'd always kind of pictured for my wedding day.

So my question is... Has anybody ever been to a wedding reception at Promontory Point?

We're looking at about 150 guests. And we're looking at May or September. The park district claims the Point can accomodate almost 300, with patios tented. Will it be big enough? Will I have to worry about the weather being too cold or rainy for a partially outdoor affair in May or September? And has anybody dealt with the Chicago Park District before? Will that be a nightmare?

Thank you so much in advance, and I look forward to getting to know you all better and sharing the excitement of our Chicago weddings!

I don't know anyone who has had it there, but I remember last year (or even longer than that) there was talk about PP. The big downsides were that it's a public structure, so even if you've booked your reception there, someone could be walking down the beach, and have to go potty and they have every right to use the bathrooms during your event.

Another issue that was brought up was parking - or lack thereof; security was also an issue from my recollection. You have to hire security and I remember someone saying something about it being a great thing they required it b/c they needed it the night of their wedding b/c of riff-raff coming in and disturbing their event.

Hi there!  I have booked my Wedding at promontory point for this June and haven't even started with any of the preparations yet!  So far the CPD have been great but not sure how that will pan out once we start trying to plan!  Did you book the venue in the end?  All the best!!
  • Hi! Is anyone able to follow up on their experiences with Promontory Point? I am also looking to book, for 2014. Just got engaged a couple weeks ago but if I want the wedding next year, it looks like I need to get on it! I plan to go to an open house next week but I would love to hear from people's first-hand experiences with the venue and possibly any tips would be much appreciated as well! Thank you!
