Name Change Question (and Vent)

So I went to the SS office today to change my name.  I brought my SS card, drivers license, passport, and our marriage certificate.  Apparently, this was not enough.  Since the marriage certificate I brought was given to us by our priest, and not by the state, I was told that I could not legally change my name unless I had another form of ID with me that showed that I had legally changed my name.  WTF?

Ok. done venting.  So here's my question - do I really need to go to the Daley Center to get a state-issued certificate?  Can I request it just be mailed to me?  Does it cost anything?  TIA for your help!

It's so much faster if you just go to the Daley Center to get it. I got two copies and was done in about 15 minutes. Good luck!

SS requires your original state issued marriage license and your original SS card.

I ordered copies when we got the license and they mailed the original and copies to me.  That was DuPage County.

    Good luck.

I changed my name on my DL first....but you need a certified copy of your marriage license first too..makes EVERYTHING easier.
It's time. Adoption saving and process started in November 2012.

    while we're on the topic...

how quickly can we get the certified copy?

we're getting married on a saturday night, and leaving for the honeymoon on tuesday morning.  can we get it on monday?  that would be great, because we're flying straight home (to jersey) from the honeymoon and won't be back in chicago for a while...

<div>Mine took about a week to process.  You can order it online though and have them mail it to you in Jersey</div>

Really?  I went to the SSC in Palos Hills with my marriage certificate (copy) from the priest and all they asked me for was my DL....
