South Side Restaurant Suggestions- Hidden Gems

So, we just decided to change our west side beach wedding to the south side becasue the beach we wanted did not have good access for my FI's grandmother. I need suggestions for a restarant on the southside thats not one of the regular/hotel fancy restarants but still appropriate for a after wedding dinner with 7 people. Has anyone been to 808 bistro? Just looking for decent atmoshpere and good food and overall nice place.

I haven't eaten at 808 Bistro, but I've been there. It's next to a sandwich shop and is in a building that makes me think of a burger joint. Which beach on south side are you getting married at? How far are you willing to drive? What kind of food are you looking for?

I think we will be doing Palaua beach (white rock). I dont mind driving, we are staying in West Maui so if we had to drive I'd prefer to drive back towards where we are staying. I'm open to any type of food. Just trying to avoid the 40.00 an entree places!
  • So what price per plate do you feel comfortable with? Most places we ate at were in the $30-$35 range, which is not too far off, but it starts getting more expensive than that we you add a salad and drinks. What you're not comfortable with? Is there a max per plate?

  • One of my favorite places that I ate at on the South Shore was Sansei Seafood. I didn't eat anywhere on the West side, I would recommend.
  • I ate at 808 Bistro.  I thought it was very overrated, and if I recall properly, kind of hard to get to.  Lots of steps & level changes.  So no Gannon's or Mala?  What about Five Palms?  Th Cafe O'Lei down there is really casual and on the 2nd floor.

  • Gannon's is delicious and has a few options under $40 (at a golf course).
5 Palms has a 3 course sunset menu for $30 that is available for 5 and 5:30 pm seatings (at a hotel).

  • there really isnt a max per plate since it's just a dinner for 7 of us, I was just trying to be a little budget conscious. Thanks Tanq thats good to know that 808 is hard to get to! I was looking at Cafe O'lei, wish their website was working. I think I may just have to not look at prices and just pick a place :)
  • One of the brides from last year ate at Cafe O'lei after her wedding and loved it.
  • On the west side I would recommend David Paul's Island Grill, I'O or Pacifico. Alll were delicious. You could also do Merriman's which is very nice.

  • I am looking for the same thing we have 7 people as well 5 adults and 2 tweens.  I emailed Capische? for their IL Teatro room, it is a private dinning room.  They cater to your every need, make the food infront of you.  However, it is $200.00 per person.  $175.00 for food and $75.00 for the wine II think it is a glass with each course not sure how many.  New search for me, this is just a wee bit much considering there is only 2 of us who drink wine!! I appreciate any advice for restaurants as well.

  • David Paul's Island Grill, Pacifico & I'O in Lahaina are all delicious if you want to head back to West Maui

  • Cafe O'Lei or Gannon's Wailea.  Can't go wrong with either

  • We're doing Gannon's for our renewal dinner. David Paul's and Pacifico's were also recommended to me as well by the coordinators.
  • Also this isn't a hidden gem, but if you are looking for a more affordable meal there is also Hula Grill in Whaler's Village. It's right in front of the beach walk so you kind of have an ocean view. They have good food (nothing that will knock your socks off though or make you say wow) and live music. I've also heard that Leilani's on the Beach is good, which is in Whaler's Village as well and they have an upstairs dining area which will probably have a better view. Good luck!
