Gift for a co-worker

Okay~ I have a co-worker getting married in August. I am in a wedding and not able to attend his. Last year when someone got married we all pitched in about $15 and got one large gift card. This year, no one is going to do this. No one is even talking about a gift period. This is not aperson I hang out with outside of work, but we are a small company and he has worked here 3 years. I feel like someone should get him something, it is wrong not too. I have no clue what to spend. A lot that is on their registry is $40 and up. Again, not personal friends with him and I have two weddings I am in + ours around that time, so budget crunch. What are your opinions and what do you feel is an appropriate amount? I am thinking gift card, but dont' want to seem cheap only spending $20.

Have you mentioned to anyone else about getting a gift? If no one else is going to pitch in then, $20-30 would be fine

Yeah, for someone like that I'd probably just get a $25 gift card to wherever they're registered, or maybe to a restaurant I know the couple likes.

I would do one of two things: 1) ask another coworker to go in on a registry gift with you.  Spend the $35-$40 and get them something off their registry. 2) Buy them a moderately priced (you could easily stay under $15) bottle of champagne and card.  Throw it in a nice bag and consider yourself done :)

I'd solicit your co-workers too... if he's worked there this long and invited everyone I think people could cough up even $10 apiece to get to a $40 item.  If not, I agree that a gift card or bottle of wine is the best route.  He'll appreciate that you thought of him if no one else at work does!

Thanks ladies, I did bring it up to the gal that usually organizes it and she said that she was not going to do a thing. She was tired of always being the "organizer" and not getting a thank you from anyone for doing that. So... I will probably go with the wine thing. I can get a good bottle of wine cheap.
