slideshow projector - wtf?!

FI and I have been planning a short slideshow for the reception, and FI has been so helpful in taking charge and putting it together. One problem - what do we do for a projector!? Our reception hall does not have them, the place they recommend charges $200, and our dj charges $299 to provide one. Yikes!!! I'm not so sure we can swing another $200-299 just for a 5min slideshow.
What am I missing? Is there anywhere else I should be looking, or are these prices pretty typical??
Another random question... FI has set the slideshow to music, but how do we project the sound?

Ask your DJ about projectors and sound. They may have some ideas. We ended up calling around to various places and the best we found was $80. Most seemed to be in the $200 range though. We actually ended up borrowing the one from my mom's office, so you may wanna check with friends that may have access to that kind of thing.

This is just an idea, but what about putting it on a DVD, and playing it on a loop on a small TV that you could set by the bar? I just did a quick search on bestbuy.com, and there's a 19" Dynex for $129.99, and DVD player for $32.99.

That would be a little less than what you've been looking at for projectors, and then you'll have the TV.

We decided to make one without music and just play it as a continuous loop on FI's laptop.  We will set it off to the side where people can just come and go.  People can watch it on their own time and we don't have to pay for the projector.  Just another option.

I was at a wedding once where they had the slideshow running on a digital picture frame on the guestbook table. Yes, some digital picture frames are a tad expensive... but at least it's something you could keep ;-)

Do you know any teachers?  A lot of schools have portable projectors that would work.

We're going to put a slideshow together on our digital frame and have it sitting next to the guest book.  That way people can watch it when they want to.  I was at a wedding last weekend where the slideshow was almost 10 minutes long--lots of people got up and left...
