Weisman Art Museum

My fiance and I are trying to plan our wedding in Minneapolis for this fall. This has been challenging, to say the least, because neither of us reside in Minneapolis or even the state of Minnesota. As of now, we are seriously considering the Weisman as our ceremony/reception site. One of our concerns about choosing the venue is that we're not sure which caterer to choose. We can only choose from:
  • Georgia's Catering/Kafe 421
  • D'amicos
  • Common Roots
  • Fabulous Catering
Any suggestions on caterers? Feedback about using the Weisman as our venue?

Thanks!

Now I am biased because I admit I think the Weisman is an eyesore.

That said - if you want a campus location, look at the McNamara Alumni Center - it is gorgeous.  I also think the parking around there is much better but be sure to check your date against the TCF Arena.

I used to work at the Alumni center (for the Alum Assoc, not a caterer) and we would usually have D'Amico for our events.  They did a fantastic job and were relatively reasonably priced.  If you do a tasting, be sure to see if they still offer fresh pineapple dipped in dark chocolate - it is absolutely to die for.

I'm on the other side of the fence - I LOVE the Weisman! I think it's funky and unusual and had looked into it at one point as well but our guest list was too big. If you're looking to have a less traditional and funky reception, I def think it's the way to go!

D'Amico's has good food, but I know they're pricey and don't know what you're looking to spend. Common Roots has really good food too. I've seen wedding photos taken at the Weisman and they were really nice, McNamara is also another really nice option- but I know the rental rate there is really high.

I don't know much about the Weisman as a venue, but have worked with both D'Amico and Fabulous for other events. D'Amico is not cheap, but the food is always great and the service is top-notch. They are a popular choice for caterers at many venues around town, so their food might not be as creative or unique.
Fabulous was a little less expensive and still tasty - I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Thank you for this feedback. You guys have been extremely helpful. The other venue that we're considering is the MInneapolis Central Library. Any thoughts about this place? I guess my fiance and I are going for something less traditional. We just want something that's fun and enjoyable for all, especially since 90% of our guests will be flying in and for some this will be their first experience in the Twin Cities.

We looked a the Weismann and Central Library because we wanted something clean and modern, We also looked at the Walker Art Center, and finally decided on Le Meridien Chambers. Our ceremony will take place in the Burnet Art Gallery within the hotel and the reception (catered by D'Amico) is in the rooftop lounge. WAC and Chambers have an exclusive relationship with D'Amico, just to keep that in mind.

We just signed our contract with the Weisman!  We haven't decided on a caterer, but Kafe 421 has been one of our fave Dinkytown restaurants.  D'Amico seems a little played out.  Let me know if you decide to stay with the Weisman - I think it's a great unique space.
