Cedar Grove vs Taravella Manor

Hello everyone! I was just engaged a week ago, but we are already on the ball trying to get a venue/date set. We are on a tight budget, so the two places I am considering so far is Taravella Manor and Cedar Grove Tchopitoulas Plantation. They both are similar in the fact that they have an outside ceremony area and inside reception area, however Taravella is much cheaper.

Has anyone been to a wedding at Taravella Manor and can tell me about their experience? Any other affordable wedding venues that I should consider?

Thanks for yalls help! :)

Congratulations!!! I am a huge foodie so I tend to remember food at wedding receptions lol. I have been to weddings at both Taravella and Cedar Grove the food was good at both venues but I remember Cedar having a larger food selection. It also depends on the location you want to have your reception. I live in downtown New Orleans and Cedar was a pretty far distance about 20 - 30 min travel time versus Taravella which was about 10 - 15 min away. The ceremony site at Cedar appears to be larger than the one at Taravella...how large of a guest list are you and the future hubby expecting?

Depending on your budget a few other reception venues you can consider are: Smilie's, Lace the Grand Ballroom, Jefferson Orleans North or South, Gallier Hall (catering not included you can choose your own caterer), Champagne Palace, and The Balcony. Also remember that you can save money by cutting your guest list, having a wedding during the day, having a wedding on a non-traditional day such as a Friday or Sunday wedding, and by having a wedding during non peak season. I really hope this helps.
  • I'm getting married at CGT on Saturday. So far, it has been a WONDERFUL experience. Jill is incredibly knowledgable and patient, and will work with you to make sure your day is perfect. She books very quickly, though - We were engaged in August of 2010, picked our venue in early 2011 for a wedding in November of 2012, and most of the November slots were already full! We were lucky to get the day we wanted, but ended up getting a day reception instead of evening (which actually is turning out for the best).

I'll be posting vendor reviews after the wedding!

  • Thanks for your help! Please post a review on your wedding after! Good luck on Saturday!

  • We are having our ceremony and reception at CGT. We booked in Jan of this year for our March 2013 wedding. As soon as we stepped on to the plantation we knew this was the place for us. After meeting with Jill, we were even that much more sure! She is amazing, and loves what she does. You will feel like part of the family after meeting with her. I haven't heard one negative review from anyone who has been there. Hope this helps!
  • I considered CGT Plantation when I was in the very beginning stages of planning our wedding. The home itself was very pretty. However, Jill was a whole other story. We found her to be pretty rude at times. She was not nearly as flexible as other venue owners we had spoken to. She refused to reserve a table for the bridal party, told us that we had to actually book and pay for the venue before we could have a food tasting, and that we could only use her DJ rather than one of our chosing (her DJ asked a bride ahead of time to complie a CD with her favorite songs and that was all she played the whole entire reception.) It's a shame because the house is really pretty. The outdoor ceremony space was not bad, but looked pretty grungy when we were there (there was green mildew on the white chairs.) It was a no for me.
  • I'm VERY shocked at the negative post about Jill at CGT Plantation! I have been working with her since Jan for our March 2013 wedding. I'm an OOT bride also, and she has been MORE than helpful every step of the way.  The plantation is absolutely beautiful, clean, and with the decor it's pretty much ceremony/reception ready...I would recommend going to the plantation and meeting Jill yourself.
  • Hello I was also going with Jill but decided not to because of the DJ and table
