Louisiana-New Orleans

2nd line

I've been looking at reception venues throughout the city. My fiance and I have pretty much narrowed it down between The Foundry and The Chicory. Any ideas on where to 2nd line? Do most people 2nd line to a specific destination and then everyone disbands or do you just 2nd line around the venue and out to the car?

Re: 2nd line

  • We are going to do ours from ceremony site to reception - 1/2 mile. I'm going to hire a carriage to take my grandmother and anyone else who is unable to walk that far.

    We're doing the same
  • We are just second lining around inside the hotel because we didn't want to bother with permits, etc. Have you hired a jazz band yet?

  • I went to a wedding in the Audubon Tea Room, where they had the second line inside, and they ended it going out to the getaway car...It was fun! Going through the quarter is fun, but it can get you sweating quick!

Do you have to have a permit to 2nd line down the street?
  • ^^Yes, and you need to pay for a police escort.
  • I second lined from the church to the reception site... 1/2 mile. You have to pay $50.25 for the permit and about $300 for the police escort. It's a pain in the butt to get the permit. Sgt. Walter Powers is in charge and waits until the last minute to get everything for you. I got my permit 2 days before my wedding. Good Luck!
  • we are having our ceremony and reception at the same place, prolly the Board of Trade just outside of the quarter. We really want to do a second line tho. Any thoughts on when we do it? We thought about after the reception is over but afriad some people will be too tired, feet hurting from dancing to want to do it. Or maybe do it right after the ceremony? Not sure about wasting reception /open bar time tho? any thoughts ladies? (I live in NOLA but not from here so i have only done a 2nd line once)

I would do the second line in between the ceremony and reception. I don't really think of it as wasting reception time, because it's a fun activity that everyone will enjoy and I think it really adds to the experience. It also gives your venue some time to make sure everything is perfectly in place for the reception.

thanks for that input! I was thinking the same thing about giving them time to take apart the courtyard as the ceremony site and reset it as the reception site.

  • We're having our ceremony and reception at board of trade also.  We're going to second line immediately after the ceremony and come back for the reception. They told us that would also give them the time to re-set the courtyard, so guests will come back to a different look!
