Does your FI/H make you smarter?

I saw this posted on a forum frequented mainly by men and thought it was an interesting question.  Too bad they proceeded to basically call their girlfriends/wives dumb biitches. So, I'm curious - does you FI or H make you "smarter"?  Have you learned from him?  Has he learned from you?  Do you feel that you are pretty equally matched or do you feel like you are the brains of the pair?

Re: Does your FI/H make you smarter?

  • I think we both have our strengths and weaknesses and try to help eachother learn. I am a bit better at quick, in my head math, he's a better editor than me even though its part of my job (but his ENTIRE job hence his excelling). On the lighter side, he is better at new-fangled video games and has taught me to love our XBox, and I am better with things like photograph/photoshop so I try to teach him some of my skillz.
  • FI and I are different kinds of smart, so while I don't think one of us is smarter than the other, we excel in different areas, so we learn from each other.
  • I don't think either of us makes the other smarter.  I say we are probably close to even.  I do think I am more common sense/people smart and he is more school/book smart, although he never reads for fun and I love to read. FI has told me before that being with me makes him want to work harder and achieve more.
  • Scott's pretty smart, and about totally different things than what I'm well versed in.If he didn't make me smarter or wasn't able to hold intelligent conversation, I wouldn't have married him.

  • Combined, Jon and I are really smart. I struggle terribly with math and can barely add, although I need math for my degree. It makes things difficult. However, I can write essays, analyze data and argue with confidence.Jon, on the other hand, had difficulty reading as a child and it kind of lingered since his teachers didn't really notice much was wrong. He hates to read, and has trouble putting his thoughts into words sometimes. He is, however, an electrical engineer and an absolute whiz with numbers, and diagrams and all things scientific. I think we make each other smarter...
  • I think we're equally smart as far as that goes, but yes I can say he's definitely taught me a lot of things.  He's got a degree in Biology and is a wetland ecologist, so I've learned SO many things from him about plants and animals and wetlands.  There was also a time when I really didn't read or watch news or follow current events, until he really encouraged me to do so.  Now I am addicted to cnn.com and I feel like I have a much better understanding and knowledge about the world around me.  So you could say he taught me that too.I know I've taught him a lot about sharing and compromising, and about fraud investigations, Ponzi schemes, and stuff like that.

  • FI and I are pretty well-matched in the brains department.  I'm definitely more philosophical/intellectual than him, but that doesn't necessarily make me smarter. He's really good at reading people/body language.
  • I've learned a lot from him actually and I like to think that he's learned from me, but he's typically full of useless trivia so who knows. We're pretty equally matched.  He probably has a slight lead because he's always looking crap up and getting new information - like how to easily peel a boiled egg.  He spent about 2 months researching how to best build our deck.  Stuff like that.  He has this unending quest for knowledge that's cool, but often annoying.

  • FI is science and math smart, politics smart, and random trivia smart.  I'm common sense smart (most of the time), planning ahead smart (yes, I think there is such a thing), grammar and spelling smart, and social sciences smart.  I think we balance each other out really well.  FI being into politics and current events (even though we have different political views) has really increased my political knowledge and my attention to what's going on in the world.  Me being a grammar nazi has made FI better at that kind of stuff.

  • We have different strengths/smarts. This makes us better as a team, I think anyway, because we can each take the "lead" on what we excel.
  • We learn from each other. So yes, I've learned a lot being with him, but he's learned a lot from me too. He has a better memory than I do so his brain is more filled with facts and trivia than mine, but if you're talking about straight intelligence, I'd guess we're about even -- I don't know for sure, but my guess is that by IQ, we're probably very close. And while we have a lot of topics that we're both interested in, we also each have our own individual interests that we've introduced to the other.
  • I feel like the only knowledge I acquire from FI is random and useless trivia about movies.  He works in political media so he clears up a lot of my questions about politics too.Overall, I think we're just two different types of thinkers: I'm a logical organizer and planner, while he's the "idea getter."
  • I have learned a lot from my H in some aspects.  I think, for the most part, we are pretty evenly matched.  We challenge eachother and it's something that we both like.
  • Depends on how you define smart.FI is much better with cars and computers and mechanical things.  Before him, I didn't know much of anything about how a car works, but he's taught me a lot of stuff about the mechanics of the car engine.  He has more common sense life type smarts, simply because he's been through more experiences than me.  I've lead a rather sheltered, no trouble causing life until I met him.I, on the other hand, am more book and theory smart and more socially aware.  I can read people better than he can, I explain a lot of things to him about history and physics (at least as much as I understand) and religion and social issues.  Much of that stuff he wasn't really exposed to growing up.I think our smarts compliment each other, we can pick up each other's slack. You wouldn't happen to have asked that question on FI's car forum?  lol  On my FI's car forum, they all think their women are stupid and dumb raging pms machines.
  • i am constantly asking him questions about anything and everything... just random knowledge about whatever i am feeling curious about at the time... i feel like he knows it all. but i teach him the practical everyday things, like how to cook, do laundry, get the toilet clean.... stuff he never learned at home i guess.
  • Mocha - which car forum does your FI frequent?
  • clubgp.com.  There's some good guys, but the majority of them are idiots.  I htink it has something to do with the declining overall age of the members.
  • Ha ha!  Different forum.  On this one, the guys are all rock stars and drive the hottest exotic cars (in their minds).
  • We're very different.  FI is very scientific minded and I'm more social minded.  He's certainly taught me about his field and I've taught him about mine.

  • FI and I are different kinds of smart, so while I don't think one of us is smarter than the other, we excel in different areas, so we learn from each other. Ditto. We both have strengths/weaknesses and I know I learn from him and he's also confirmed that he learns for me.  It's a win/win situation :)
  • Oh, believe me, there's more than a few that think their Grand Prix's are amazing exotic cars that will beat the pants off of Corvettes and the like.  Only a few are really able to do that. And people think WE'RE snarky over here, they haven't seen anything until you come up with a dumb idea on a car forum.  They'll slaughter anyone.
  • But they're (mostly) guys (I assume).  From guys, that stuff is expected, tolerated, and amusing.  From women, it just makes us biitches.  Double standard much? And PS, my Dodge Stratus can beat the pants off your cars!!!1!!11!

  • That's why I like guys better.  They can take a verbal beating without getting butthurt and DDing.  Actually, I don't think you can DD over there, only a mod can, and they enjoy the slaughter.Bish, meet me at the track down there, I'll take on your Stratus!!11!!
  • You're on!  For a fair warning, I have the SE with the 3L limited edition Mitsubishi Eclipse engine.  Still wanna go?!?!11!! hahaha

  •  We learn from each other constantly.  Isn't that what relationships are all about?  I learn from my friends, sister, and pets as well. I am the one with the common sense, he's the brainiac.

  • I was really into cars before I met H, but that's how we were introduced any how.  However, his knowledge of cars is amazingly impressive.   He just rebuilt a flooded 2005 RX8 for me (my baby) and is building me a 1960 Pontiac Ventura.  Among his own projects (1964 Impala, 1989 Dodge D50 with a turbo charged eclipse motor, and his new toy 1998 BMW Z3)  I never stop learning about them. He's learned some thing from me too I'm sure.  I'm the queen of useless random knowledge that he calls me for.

  • I haven't seen Pinks.  Supposedly there was going to be an episode between two of the big GTP vendors from the forum with their modded out drag cars.  I forget if it ever happened.Sorry for threadjacking Geek!
  • lol, it's cool Mocha!  I like cars :)  We're going to be building a rally car.  H has a turbo Miata that kicks @ss 'round these parts.  I've actually done some road course track time at the local track.
