  • you disagree with someone's lifestyle in that you don't agree with the way they live. I never said in this entire 5 pages that I do not agree with anyone's marriage that did not take place in a Church. I said that was your prerogative. I said for me, marriage is beyond a legal document signed but also involves God and prayer, blessing with the Church, the Pastor etc.
  • @ leah - that's why I said my world is so different from yours. We couldn't live in each other's worlds.
  • We are all human, we are not all christian/jewish/muslim/buddhist.  Therefore, we should all follow human rights ideals, and laws should be made to abide by those ideals.  Not religious ideals.
  • Since KA isn't a citizen, she cannot vote to impose her (in my opinion) narrow-minded religious views on the citizens of this country. For this, I am exceedingly grateful. Marriage is a LEGALLY binding agreement. When the rights of inheritance, medical decisions, medical visitation, tax rates, etc. are all affected by marital status, which is legally denied to my MIL by virtue of who she has chosen as her life partner, that is simply wrong in my view. And yes, I do consider myself to be a Christian, and a practicing one at that.
  • I said for me, marriage is beyond a legal document signed but also involves God and prayer, blessing with the Church, the Pastor etc. So you have yet to answer the question, why should your religious views be imposed on someone else? For some people, marriage is legal, not spiritual. Should they get to impose their views on you and repress all religion, since it doesn't fit in with their belief structure?
  • And to answer your poll, Fischey: 1) Yes, only because you didn't share 2) I could run 5 miles without stopping to walk 3) For, because heterosexuals have fuucked up the institution of marriage so bad (Mark Sanford comes to mind immediately), surely homosexuals can do better at it 4) Nah, don't bother. It will only get dirty again.
  • you disagree with someone's lifestyle in that you don't agree with the way they live. i just don't understand this.  you don't agree? what don't you agree with? the way they live?  do you say, "i don't agree that you only have one toilet?" or, "i don't agree that you're living a gay lifestyle"? or, "i don't agree that your kitchen has an island?"also - you mentioned you're pentacostal, ka. have you seen the documentary jesus camp?
  • Someone posted in the same-sex marriage forum asking for us  to post, but I think this discussion has somewhat dissipated by now. I didn't see any argument against same-sex marriage that wasn't religion-based and I learned long ago that anyone who feels that strongly about their religion isn't going to change their mind because of an internet discussion. So let me just say thank you to everyone who supports marriage equality and send my condolences to those who are so blinded by hate that they don't believe everyone deserves equal rights.
  • 1)  Only if it is large quantities on a daily basis.2)  Get up from the floor without using my hands.3)  For.  I think it's like interracial marriage--in a few years, everyone will wonder why there was such a big fuss against allowing it.  Why should we deny people social and legal protections based on the gender of the person they fall in love with?Even if you don't care about the civil rights of gay people, gay marriage contributes to the stability of the lives of the children of gay relationships.  If one parent dies or there is a break-up, do you really want the children torn from the parent who has been raising them all these years?4) Probably not.  ;-)
  • Oh, and on the religion point:  It is the ban on gay marriage that violates freedom of religion.  In all the years that Massachusetts has had gay marriage, not a single church has ever been required to perform a gay marriage.  Conversely, my own religion (Reform Judaism) is solidly in favor of gay marriage, but is unable to perform them in 45 of the 50 states.
  • So you have yet to answer the question, why should your religious views be imposed on someone else? She did.  She basically said that she believes that she is on the side of god, and therefore she is justified b/c she's imposing god's values, not her personal values.  Later she said she came from a community where people are very judgmental (ex. living together before marriage, premarital sex, smoking, etc) about things that violate their own moral code.  I think it is a cultural thing.
  • I'm so late to this, but I don't care:1) If I judged you, I'd have to judge myself. So the answer is no.2) Get crazily wasted. I'm sure I can do it now, but I don't, haha.3) For- the argument about marriage being religious and 'between a man and a women in the eyes of God' doesn't stick well given that the vast majority of people in my country who are married are not religious, and do not marry respecting the religion from which marriage originated. Marriage has surpassed its religious roots and is more of a social symbol of love in my culture, and for that reason I do not see why those who love same sex partners are denied the right to announce their love to their friends and family in the same way as their hetrosexual peers.4) I would say you've probably already done this by now.
  • Just wanted to say that im a lesbian and im getting married in Maryland. We do not care if it is not legal here. We love each other and have been togeather almost 5 years. To us we are entering a committed marriage. Our god loves and supports us, as well as, our families. Thank you for all of the support. I hope that in the future my FI and I can share health benefits and file our taxes togeather.

  • For the record I am saying vows in front of god, before a pastor and infront of my congregation of family and friends. Where is my marriage license? LOL A piece of paper means nothing to us.
