Do I have to tip the DJ?

During our final meeting with the DJ company, the sales manager told us that the DJs really appreciate a tip. He said the amount varies "from $50 to $200 depending on how much fun you had." I was appalled. We are paying over $1,000 for 4 1/2 hours of his time and now they expect a tip? The last thing I will be thinking about on my wedding night is how much to tip the DJ. And if we are supposed to tip him based on his quality of service, we obviously can't prepare the tip ahead of time and give it to our coordinator. When I asked the coorinator about this, she said if the gratuity isn't written into the contract, we don't need to do it. But I am wondering if it is customary to tip your DJ.

Re: Do I have to tip the DJ?

  • Yes - it's customary to tip the person. That DJ won't get the $1000 you're paying - the company will.

  • Yes, it is customary to tip the DJ if you are pleased with his service. Some say that a tip is not necessary if the DJ owns his own company, but I would tip regardless just as long as we had a good time. We paid $1,000+ for our DJ as well and tipped him $100 because like PP said, he is not seeing much of that $1,000+. He doesn't own the business and DJs on the side.

  • The general rule for all vendors and whether they get a tip is if they are self-employed, they do not need a tip. If they are employed my a company, then they should get a tip. Your DJ will see very little of that $1000. DJ companies are pretty jacked up that way. This is why I'm going with a small company that has only 3 DJs; I have a lower cost and better paid DJs to boot.If you fail to tip your DJ it would be like going out to eat and not leaving a tip for your server.
