Listening to Obama?

Re: Listening to Obama?

  • Not being a parent myself (and possibly speaking out of turn), I think it's ridiculous when people expect the government/media/the rest of the world to censor itself to their views so as not to inflict other opinions on their children.This.  Some filmmaker who is known for making explicitly violent films (wish I could remember who) was confronted by a parent group, and asked if he would want his own children watching that kind of stuff.  "I don't want them watching it," he replied, "so they don't.  That's my job as a parent, not the filmmaker's job."

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • For the record, I didn't post anything.  I have been logged off for a few hours now.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I just read the text of the speech on line, and it sounded great to me. I think kids need to be getting more inspirational speeches, keeping them on track. I dont see how anyone could be offended by that.
  • Personal responsibility is for socialists!!
  • Bec is was Juliebug or something like that who deleted her post.
  • I read somewhere that this isn't the first speech that Obama was going to give- that originally, he was going to talk about things that are challenging the nation now, and how each person in school can grow up to help America face these challenges by staying in school, working hard, and becoming a productive member of society.  I forget which senator said something like, America is the greatest country on the face of the earth, and I don't want my kid to think anything different!  Cause you know, reality is ONLY what YOU want it to be fucktard.
  • You know, I might care about what he had to say if he was actually a citizen of our country.  Don't talk to me about Americn education when you aren't even an American!

  • I think the problem with American politics today is that Bush was so divisive, he made it pretty much impossible to be a moderate.  Things have become so deeply entrenched along party lines that anyone who would rather form their own opinions rather than parrot what they're fed has pretty much given up in despair.  Personally I don't think either party is right, but I find the crazy liberals less hateful than the crazy conservatives.

We were in the car for 6 hours yesterday, so we popped a DVD in for my girls (8 and 11) It was "Pay It Forward," which is a PG-13 movie, but the theme is so good, I let them watch it. There were a couple of scenes in it that made them uncomfortable, and they ASKED to turn it off. How's that for discernment!
  • Sorry betrothed! I thought it was you. Yours is one of only a few sigs I can see, and I must have seen it on another thread right before I saw J-bug or whatever's post. SO SORRY! I've seen disgustingly nasty from both parties. Tit for tat only works when tat is worthy of a response anyway. If people would just put aside their hand-fed one liners and speak issue by issue from their minds and hearts, we wouldn't have such horrible discourse today.

How's that for discernment!Exactly!  My mom started taking me to R-rated movies when I was 13.  She knew I was mature for my age and could handle it, and she was there when I couldn't.  (I remember burying my face in her lap when the guy lit on fire in The Green Mile.)  Plus, we would talk about the movies afterwards, and she could answer any questions they raised.  I really valued that as a kid, and I fully intend to treat my kids the same way.

  • *snort* East, you are so right.  Hawaii is NOT part of the US! *shakes fist*
  • I think there is just a disgusting lack of respect for the Presidency and the actual President in general these days.  Even dating back to Bush.  Even if you don't like him, he is the PRESIDENT.  If he wants to do something harmless like give his nations children a encouraging speech, that's his prerogative.   Cause you know, he lives in the big white house and you don't.   There is no reason for people to be acting like fools over this.  Even if parents disagree with everything he says, what they should be teaching their children is "Even if we don't agree with him, we respect our Presidents position enough to listen."

  • Miss Intentional--excellent point!! They aired the OJ verdict in the library in HS, and our math teacher actually let some of us go to the library to watch the verdict roll in. They broadcast the audio over the PA system.I agree with what everyone has said here. It's incredibly sickening how people are hate and fear-mongering every little thing the president does. Get a grip already! He's here for 4 years, like it or not. Even though I disagreed with Bush, I didn't hate him nor did I believe he was evil.
